MommyPig
Junior Guinea Pig
Just after 1:30 am on Saturday morning, Mielie passed away in my arms after a very quick decline.
We were worried about Mielie drinking excessive amounts of water and had the vet test him for diabetes, but he could not get enough blood for the test. Since his weight was stable, we decided just to keep a close eye on him. Three days later I noticed blood in his urine and he was started on a course of antibiotics, which he hated. Up and to Thursday, he was still eating and very chatty, but on Friday morning he just wanted to lie under the radiator and ate a few bites of cucumber and lettuce. We were going to take him to his vet and a specialist in guinea pigs on Saturday, but called the vet out at 11 pm when Mielie stopped using his front leggies. Dr Albert gave him something for pain and food to syringe feed, but our baby did not want to take the food. At 1 am he started vomiting while lying on my chest and then he was gone...
My boyfriend and I have been in pieces since the passing; Mielie was his favourite piggy. He had such a big personality. On weekday mornings, he would have lie-ins with Daddy Pig, sometimes until 9 in the morning, but on Saturdays he would wake us before 8 with his squeakles. Mielie could be quite grumpy, especially when you waked him before he was ready, having his hair dried after a wash or gave him meds. He was very melodramatic too. When he was due to have his nails trimmed, he would start crying even before you put the clippers to his nails! He loved reading; paper, boxes, text books, my students' homework, Daddy's driver's licence and panama hat! We miss his bubble butt waddling up and down the hall, peeking around the sofa to check on us and see if we had left him some new reading material.
To keep him close, he was laid to rest in a large flower pot on the balcony, since we do not have a garden. He is survived by his brother, Muffin who stayed with him until the end, and two step-brothers, Darwin and Sweepy.
We thought that he would be with us for at least seven or more years and after not even three, I feel robbed and heart-broken. I have so many what ifs...but one thing is for sure, he was our baby pig and will always be our baby pig.
