Well we are venturing into all sorts of unknown food territory this week, last night asparagus, I am wondering if the might eat a bit of swede on sunday? My mum wants a sprout curry (one of my xmas vegan oddity dishes that mum and piggy daddy like a lot!) And I bought swede as the root veg to go in it because it was only 50p with no plastic packaging!
Do we think the piggies might eat swede with sprout trimmings for sunday dinner like the hoomans are, or will I get the eveil pig eye look like I am trying to poison them?

Mine wouldn't eat it. Peanut like a little bit of parsnip occasionally but the other's won't touch that either. They shouldn't have root veg very often anyway so it's no great loss!

Mine won't touch butternut squash or parsnips, and Theo still hasnt forgiven me for that time over a year ago when he thought the white chunks in his dinner should be apple but they were turnip. He ate them anyway, but with such a sad betrayed little face they''ve never had turnip inflicted on them since! Its just that time of year again though for root veg stews and curries, and there's always a few spare offcuts and I hate food waste. Maybe the giant snails might be more amenable to swede...

Ooh, can you post the recipe for sprout curry, it sounds interesting! My hubby loves sprouts, it sounds a great way to get him to eat more of them instead of meat, and make them more enjoyable for me too.
Perhaps there should be a Recipes (for humans) thread too :P

Yes, they are edible but most piggies don't like them, so don't be surprised!

Mine will eat a bit of swede but only the inner - not the outer. They will also eat parsnip peelings but hate courgette.

Sprout curry is another dead easy recipe I mostly made up myself! Boil about 16 sprouts, and steam some sort of chopped root veg (half a swede, or a turnip and a carrot or parsnip, or a sweet potato) in a steamer over the top, for 10 to 15 minutes. Chop a big white onion and saute in plenty olive oil with chilli and garlic if you like, in a big pan, then add lots of curry spices just as its cooked and stir well. Add a tin of tomatoes and a tin of lentil and tomato soup and heat until its bubbling nicely, then chuck in the pre-cooked sprouts and root veg and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring every minute. If it seems a bit watery you can chuck in a dollop of tomato puree or a big squirt of ketchup while its simmering and cook a bit longer :)
I invented this a few Christmases ago after my daughter cooked Christmas dinner for the first time and bought far, far too many veg, we were still currying sprouts and parsnips at the end of january and there were still some left in the freezer the following summer!

Dot loves parsnips, Bernie hates them, Courgettes they both run away from, lol
Yes courgettes are an evil trick, they look like cucumber but taste nasty! I dont like courgettes myself so I totally sympathise with the piggies on that one, same with marrow, my mother in law used to grow organic marrows because it was one of the few veg that didnt get eaten by slugs... here's a hint, if its organic veg and slugs wont eat it, it probably isnt very nice!

Slugs seem to love cat food

My lot will only eat courgette if its peeled and only like parsnip peelings! Not tried them on swede. They only like buternut squash peelings and love sweet potato grated, sliced, chunks or anyway!

My lot will eat anything, they've very much embraced the "you'll get what you're given" way of feeding, and after a while the generally disliked veg like squashes, courgettes, parsnips etc have become many of their favourites.

..but swede? 😂 they'll eat it if I give it to them in peelings, but the larger the lump, the less likely they are to eat it.
