Hey.

In the post @sport_billy made, they mentioned roll call threads for those in self isolation.

That would be me, I guess. I've got a weak immune system, and right now, I've actually got strep and a severe sinus infection. Which, of course, is doing me no favours. Corona has had its first community spread in my state, Nebraska, in the last 24 hours. We're preparing for a big shut down here. We've gone up 11 infected from March 13th to 2 hours ago, and that's only the people they're bothering to test.

Even before my University was shut down, I was already gone for several days due to being sick. I was off campus when it shut down, and I'm having difficulty getting my stuff to me now that I'm stuck in the basement all day. My mom is so worried about me going out that she's sending my brothers to get my clothes and my plants. She really doesn't want me going outside, upstairs, or anywhere.

I haven't been getting much better unfortunately. On Tuesday, it'll be a week since I last saw the doctor. If I haven't improved by then, we'll take me back. I'm not sure what they're going to do though. My insurance won't cover any special tests, and hours at work have been slashed due to Corona.

I'm getting kinda lonely down here. Luckily, I've got my piggies down here with me! We've been watching The Simpsons most of the day. I feel like back when I was a little kid, and I'd go to the "sick room" and watch Scooby Doo all day, except now there's a distinct lack of gummy snacks. Which is a darn shame.

Do any of you guys have fond childhood memories of a "sick room" or a "sick day"?

Hey, that sounds really tough. We don’t really have basements in the UK you could live in. We have cellars in some old houses from early 1900’s that were used to store stuff. US basements always make me think of The Goonies and things like that.
Hope you are as comfortable as you possibly can be, guinea pigs and the Simpsons sounds like that will help a little.

Wow, I didn't know the UK didn't have basements. That's pretty interesting! You learn something new every day I guess.

The tentative date is the end of the month basically. The 25th exactly I think. If things aren't getting better here by then, I probably still won't be allowed out of the house, but at least I'll be able to be upstairs.

My mom is here, but she's my grandma's primary caretaker, so she doesn't come down and stay a while. My grandma is also in quarantine I guess, she just hasn't gotten sick yet and the hope is to keep it that way. My brothers don't live here, but they help us by running around and bringing us things, like my clothes, ps4, etc. As I said though, if things dont start getting better, I think everyone will start going into isolation.

I'm not going to lie, things here in the U.S. are seeming pretty scary. Our government just isn't handling this well, and they really dropped the ball on preparing for this.

On a positive note, every time I start thinking about bad things too much, one of the boys starts rattling and biting at their bottle, which is a great distraction xD

I'll take your suggestions for good snacks! I got some German chocolate cake Friday night, and my mom likes to bake. Maybe I could ask for some banana bread? Are there any special UK treats you guys enjoy I might not know about?

@piggieminder I have, as I remember seeing that when I first joined the forum.

I'm on some strong antibiotics, and after being on them for 24 hours, I was informed I would be out of the infectious stage. I was on them for 4 days before getting my boys(and had strep for at least a day before it was confirmed), and I continue to take them as well. My body just isn't very good at fighting things off unfortunately, and I'm mostly struggling with the sinus infection that's causing me a good deal of pain. The pills suck, they're big ole horse pills I have to take multiple times a day. I should be long out of the infectious phase, even though I'm not feeling much better.

I am also barely handling my boys at the moment, since they are so new. Mostly just creeping on them. I'll keep in mind about making sure I'm okay first.

If this isn't safe still, I'll see about moving them into a temporary housing situation upstairs. I also have several masks, so if that would help, I can wear those down here as well. The boys already mean so much to me, I'd be heartbroken if I somehow got them sick!

I hope you feel better very soon, and can escape your isolation. I did agonise over drawing your attention to that thread but decided I wouldn't forgive myself if I didn't and your piggies got sick. I am pleased you were aware and being carefull.

No, thank you for bringing it up! If I hadn't known I would've been absolutely horrified. You were absolutely right to draw my attention to it! Please, if you ever feel like I'm doing something wrong, let me know! I want my boys to live long and happy lives. I'm new, so I know I'm going to make mistakes, but the more I can avoid the better.

Thank you @Merab's Slave and @Flutterby . I'm hoping so as well. I got pizza for lunch today, which was nice. I can't wait for summer when the taco pizza at Papa Murphy's is back in season. Burgers and tater tots for dinner I think.

I really want to say that this sort of thread is amazing. I'm getting real lonely, and having you guys respond to this thread really is uplifting and amazing. Thank you all so much.

Hope you feel better soon xx

I'm trying to think of snacks to bake that are typically British but I’m struggling! Millionaires (caramel) shortbread (or at a push, plain shortbread) are fabulous, scones and Victoria Sponge are my thoughts but not unusual or exciting!

Sick bay memories. My best one was being about 5. I’d finished my work and been given a brand new jigsaw to do as a treat. It had kittens on it. I was happy, did the puzzle and promptly threw up all over it. So I got whisked to the sick room. There was a set of play handcuffs in there so I handcuffed myself to the radiator. Less happy when I was stuck there whilst there was a frantic hunt for the keys 😂

Sounds like a fun time in the sick bay for sure! What a shame about that puzzle.

Being honest, I've no idea what a Victorian sponge is, nor have I ever had shortbread of any kind. I'll look up recipes after this, I'm actually working on a paper right now(Thanks for the support and motivation to finish @PigglePuggle ), and my mom is making a shopping run. We could try to make one of them! Er, she could, I suppose xD

Some typical British things are a Cream Tea which is Scones, Clotted cream and strawberry jam and tea (obviously!), Bangers and mash (sausages, mashed potato, peas or mushy peas), Fish and chips, Shepherds pie, Sunday Roast and a Full English Breakfast (sausages, fried back bacon, baked beans, fried mushrooms, grilled tomato, black pudding {blood sausage}, bubble & squeak {left over potato and cabbage from yesterday mixed together and fried}, hash brown and fried bread).

Hope you feel better soon!

Agree with scones, there's also British chocolate, which tends to have a lot more sugar in it than that in the US, Cadbury's has gone down hill quite a bit, but you'll probably be able ot find it. We really do eat some weird things, come to think of it.

Thanks for enlightening me @Tigermoth and @Betsy and @Falken ! There is so much there I've definitely never seen called that before. Nor tried. Most of what you say sounds foreign to me, to be honest. I dont think I have any fancy foods here. Uh... y'all like corn casserole?

Possibly blasphemous, but... I dont like tea.

Now, before the pitchforks come out, I also don't like coffee, pop, cocoa, or alcohol. I drink pretty much exclusively water, flavoured water like propel, juices(orange, cranberry), and gatorade/powerade.

:) The black pudding is really nice, even if the ingredients list is a little disgusting. Oh, also try Yorkshire pudding, all you need to do is whisk egg and flour, slight bit of milk and preheat a dish to a high temperature for 20 minutes and spoon it in, vital that the dish be really hot so the pudding rises, it's a sort of savory food we have with gravy and meat.

Don't worry about not liking tea, we're not at all militant about it, in fact I think last year was the first year we sold more coffee than tea. It's just that we always make tea by default, birthdays, weddings, funerals, disaster and triumph, we're just culturally programmed to do it, the best brand, if you ever want to try it is probably Yorkshire Tea, which I'm sure you can get in the US, although - we all have different preferences. There's also a stereotype that we all drink Eearl Grey, we really don't - personally always thought it tasted like washing-up-liquid/dish-soap. :) Hope your recovery goes well, I'm sorry that it seems that your government is letting you down, but if it's any help, I'm sure that after this, things will change.

Roast beef and Yorkshire Pudding! You can’t get more British than that can you! Making me hungry just the thought of it!
Get well soon @Makknu don’t let this get you down x

Mcvities chocolate digestive biscuits or chocolate hob nobs and Jaffa cakes would be a winner for me

How you doing today buddy? What are you bin he watching on TV?

The reason Cadbury's has gone down hill is because it was bought out by an american company who closed the Bristol factory and took production abroad!

Hope you're feeling better today @Mikknu and that the piggies are settling in and keeping you amused.

I'm okay, if feeling a tad worse for wear. So far I've been reading. I'm a bit sad, my S.O. was going to.come visit me today but his dad wants him to help prepare for a quarantine. He's the 3rd eldest of 6 kids, and his family wants everyone in the house if things start closing down, so they've got to get so, so, so many groceries to keep 8 people fed during an isolation. He might come really late in the evening though.

I'm probably going to sleep a lot today. I finished all the college work I had yesterday, so I'm officially on "spring break" now. I feel like I want to do something productive, but all we have down here for me so far is my computer and my ps4. No art supplies or anything else like that.

All of your food sounds cool. I feel like the UK has cooler names for food than we do. When I've got the chance, I'm going to try making some of them! I'm a horrible baker, but I can cook alright. My sister is great at baking though, so I'll have her assist.

Food wise for me... I'm pretty basic. My favourite entrees are fish(any kind that's not breaded or raw), pasta, and tacos. I have a shellfish allergy, so no crab or shrimp for me unfortunately. My favourite snacks are sunflower seeds and tomatoes with salt. My favourite side dishes are corn casserole(although corn anything is a hit with me), potatoes, and stuffing. My favourite dessert is jello cake! Some people call it poke cake.

How are you feeling today?

I don't drink tea at all if I can help it - don't like it at all.

Sounds as if we could have a game for you of Guess the Ingredient!
We put our name for something, an item of food or a particular dish, and you have to guess what it is and put the American version.

Here's a couple to be going on with:
