Milly, my nearly 6yr old sow isn't very well today.
She has got urethral stones, had them for about 4mths now and they are right at the entrance to her pee hole but they are far to large for her to pass(about the size of a poop). Over the last week I have been checking on her weight and she has dropped 100g and today she isnt happy at all.
I have isolated her from the other girls, given her some carrot, spring greens and hay but I think she doesnt have much longer with us. She is very sore down below and I will possibly take her to the vet tomorrow if she doesnt pick up today and have her PTS. If she gets any worse I will take her tonight, she seems happy enough to eat, drink and poop, just down in herself.

Re: Milly isnt very well

Poor Milly, hopefully she will perk up a bit later. She is maybe just a bit sleepy and crouchy this morning.

Re: Milly isnt very well

Poor Milly, I too hopes she peaks up, I am rubish with advice but just give her cuddles and talk to her loads xxxxx

Re: Milly isnt very well

A vet could remove the stones , it may not even be neccesary to give a full anesthetic,if you can see the stones they could be removed with local sedation.
Have you tried to remove the stones yourself with KY jelly.
The stones will be blocking the urethra stopping the urine flowing propery, and the build up of stale urine could cause infection in the bladder and even in the kidney.
I would not have a pig p.m.s. for this, but I would have had the stones removed as soon as I saw them. The piggy must be very uncomfortable,no wonder she is looking miserable.

Please get her to a vet asap to have the stones removed.

Re: Milly isnt very well

I asked my vet(I would not trust anyone else with her) to remove them but being nearly 6, and her peeing without any problems we thought it was best to leave her, due to her being a small sow and the age. I have tried maniulating(sp?) them out and its not a issue here, they are far too big. I tried when I orginally found them, they have worked further down her urinary tract but they will not come out. The vet has also tried unsucessfully.

Re: Milly isnt very well

I don't think Emma would EVER concider having a piggy PTS unless she thought it absolutely last option

Re: Milly isnt very well

:) Hi Emma, I had a rescue boar in this situation once. He was 6 years old. My vet said if he was a dog he would move the stones back up into a place where they didn't cause discomfort or block entrances- anyway he decided to do this on Keenan (his first ever time for doing it on a guinea ::) ) and he just needed monitoring in case the stone moved again. This gave him an extra 6 months of quality life.
As long as she's not in pain you will have made the right choice :)

Re: Milly isnt very well

I have been offered some Uriflow from another forum member and I will give it ago but I do not know if these stones are too far advanced.
Milly is still with us today and I decided to put her back in with the other sows, due to her looking more depressed over night without her friends, I thought it might cheer her up. I have made an appointment with the vet to see if he could get them out(they have moved futher down the tract).
When I touch them they are very sore, I can imagine so. She has started a course of baytril and some pro-biotics(I was given these a bit ago incase of infection).

Re: Milly isnt very well

Anti inflammatories might be an idea too Emma, I use Rimadyl for mine @10mg x2 daily. This is also a pain killer. Metacam is another one but I prefer Rimadyl :)

Re: Milly isnt very well

i hope Milly gets better, its sounds like your doing everything you can for her 0:)

Re: Milly isnt very well

Milly has been given some pain medication and vets apointment in the morning but I have just checked on her and she is on her final journey over to Rainbow Bridge.
I have lost so many piggies over the years and you can never get over the pain of a dieing piggy and the heartbreak it causes when they do eventually pass.
I saw Milly be born nearly 6yrs ago and I have tried my best for her but its her time to leave and be free from pair or discormfort.
I still have her sister Molly and she is a fit as a lop.

She's chosen to go with you Emma, and not let you have to make the choice about her. I know what you mean about those you see being born and the ones who seem to take an extra big chunk of your heart with them. She was very, very Gorgeous :)

Re: Milly isnt very well

Re: Milly isnt very well

With her friends...
000_4640.jpg

Solar, Molly and Milly.

She was born at my house and then lived for 2yrs at the local nursary with her sister and pleased so many little lives. Then came back to live with me when the nursary closed and she has been here ever since. Over the last few months she has been living with Delightful and Tara due to her stones and wanting to keep an eye on her, Molly and Solar live at Nathans parents house, when I moved they said to leave some behind.
She was a beautiful sow and a special girl at that, I remember when I went to sex her litter and found out she had a black bum!
