Hi All, A lot of you have followed Minky's previous ops in May & June for abscess removal. The first one seemed to be successful because it came away whole like a pea out of a pod. Six weeks later it was back & she had another op to remove it. This time a drain hole was left but unfortunately I wasn't told how to keep this open & it closed after 5 days so she had to be knocked out again to have the hole re-opened. Again I wasn't told what to do but felt that my then vet had failed her. I was recommended another vet who was guinea pig savvy & on my first visit to her the next day I felt much better about Minky. She showed me how to clean the hole by inserting a moist cotton bud head into to it & twisting it before pulling it out again. Also using Manuka honey in and around the hole to help the healing process. After 5 days the area around the wound had gone right down & it actually hurt Minky when the cotton bud was inserted so we ceased this & took her back to the vet. She said it had healed nicely but was concerned that there were some lumps still inside which might come back, she had already found a smaller abscess just to the left of the first one which had been overlooked by my previous vet. I took Minky back a week later to have her stitches removed & was told to check the area around the abscess daily & take Minky back in if there was any more swelling.

Earlier this week I noticed a small scab at the told of the operation scar & this got bigger over next 2 days so got in touch with the vet yesterday (Thursday) morning & took her in on the afternoon. My vet advised that it would be best to remove all the bad stuff from inside & also to check the other smaller abscess which was close by. I took her in at 2:45 this afternoon & got a phone call at 4 to say the op had been a success & Minky had come round & that I could go and pick her up. I now have to keep the wound clean over the weekend & take her back on Monday afternoon for post-op check up. She's now in my 1200 mm hospital cage & eating by herself as if nothing has happened. I much more confident that she will get better this time. I wasn't bothered about the price as I love my piggies and would do anything for them but I was surprised when I got the bill & it was less that half price of either of the 2 previous ops that Minky had gone through. Please send all your guinea pig vibes that Minky will make a full recovery & not have to go through this again.

Sorry if I bored you with this long story but I had to put it into print. If you don't think your piggy is getting good treatment, then take them to another vet. I'm sure it's worked this time. xx

Of course you haven't bored us - I'm sorry that Minky has had to go through this, but am sending all best get well thoughts her way for a full and speedy recovery this time.

She has been through the wars! I do hope this is the last tine for a while. She certainly seems to have coped well with all these ops. By the way thanks for your post on those medicine pockets from Sarah at Chucklebunnies. I have bought two of them after seeing your post and they have been a godsend now that I am having to syringe an ill piggy several times a day.

Glad that the op went well. Getting rid of an abscess can be a nightmare! What kind of antibiotic has been prescribed?

It is a very good sign that Minky hasn't lost her appetite and just bounced back!

She on Baytril which she had after her last op 5 weeks ago. I'm also giving her 2ml of Metacam twice a day. I went down at 6 this morning & she was resting in her hay rack, it's a 300mm c&c box, open at one end. She'd almost cleared her bowl of veggies from last night as well as a second bowl of fresh grass which is her favourite. I'm just about to give her her meds & weigh her but she seems to be getting used to ops & her recovery time is improving. Thanks to all who've sent their well wishes.

I'm glad that they worked for you. Minky is that used to having meds now that she takes them just sat on my knee with a little gentle persuasion. I'd only use the medication pocket on her if she needed syringe feeding which is a longer job.

Thankfully I have been spared syringe feeding as Peanut Butter's appetite is great despite his UTI.

Poor Minky, she really has had a tough time. She is a lucky girl to have someone as vigilant and as caring as you are to help her through this. Hoping that she will heal up great this time and make a swift recovery. Lots of love to Minky from me and Rach x

Minky went back to the vets last night for check-up & everything is healing very good. My vet goes on holiday for a week from this Friday till the following Friday so she's booked in for Saturday 17th to have her stitches removed. Following this op she hasn't lost weight. When I weighed her yesterday she'd put on 1/2 ounce since last Thursday. It's looking good that she will be recovered in time for the Cavy Corner Pignic at Doncaster on the 26th so any forum members who are attending will be able to meet Minky & my other 4 piggies there. Really looking forward to it.

Glad to hear she's doing well, and yes I'm one who is looking forward to meeting her at the Pignic.
