Mirtle is dying

and I don't know what to do. She has rapidly lost weight and vet has found two firm lumps. He says that they could be cysts on her ovaries or tumours on her kidneys. He said and opreation would be too risky because she is so thin. But he is 100% certain that the lumps are tumors.

She looks all ruffled up and in pain. I have brought her home with anitbiotics and pain relief, but my heart says she needs to go to 'sleep'. I don't want her suffering.

I am sat here crying not knowing what to do.

I'm sorry you're in such a difficult situation. I've had both a pig with ovarian cysts and a pig with a kidney tumour. You can only do what's right according to your own pig, but I hope the pain relief helps some. Is she eating and pottering about at all?

It is a very difficult and heartbreaking decision to make, but for me the the guiding principle has always been that a piggy of mine was not in any major discomfort and still had an interest in life in order to help it to keep going.

Go with your guts - they usually know whether treatment is working or not.
 
Sometimes the last, kindest thing that we can do for our beloved pet is to make the decision to let them go at the end to spare them more suffering.

She's eating and pottering around a bit. But she then just goes to a corner and sits quietly in her hay. the other piggies know whats happening. x

I believe in 'quality of life'. Our love for our pets tells us when that point has been reached. Sending you love and strength. xx
 
She is getting quality of life. She has some pain relief. She still comes to the front of the hutch squealing when she sees me. At the moment I don't feel it necessary to just put her to sleep.

I am so confused.
 
I think that you will know when she is ready to be pts. If you feel that she still has a quality of life and isn't suffering then don't rush in to anything. If it gets to the stage where she is suffering, then it will be kindest to let her go. At the end of the day, you know Mirtle the best and only you can make a decision x
 
I think if she is doing those things then shes not leaving just yet.:)
 
My pig Athena is in a similar situation. She was diagnosed with a "growth" in December which they said was a tumor and is in her bowels so they can't operate. At the moment she is still a very happy pig, running round, popcorning and eating but she does bleed a little bit from her back end. I know at some point I will have to make the decision to have her pts but whilst she's still happy and painfree we're leaving her be. It was almost 4 months ago when we found out and I left the vet in tears convinced we would lose her within a week but she's still here with us. So please don't lose heart, just count every day you have with her as a blessing, you will know when the right time is to have her pts, I hope you have still got a long time before you need to make that decision x
 
You will know when the time has come, believe me! Until then, just be there for her as much as you can.

She sounds as if she is still enjoying her life, and still has some quality of life. I probably would do the same as you are doing at the moment. Our thoughts are with you and your little pig.
 
I'm so sorry Cavy. Sending my best wishes. As others have said - you will know when the time is right. It's so awful when our pets leave us, so painful. Wishing you both well x
 
I am in some parts, hoping she takes the choice away from me. I could cope with that. But to watch my pig scream as she is put down, that I could not cope with.

Hopefully it won't come to that and she will enjoy the rest of her life and go when she is ready. However, he the time comes and you do have to pts, remember that she will just drift off xx
