Dental Misaligned Jaw?

Ok, if you read my previous post about Fudge after his dental treatment, well since he has'nt been eating, but wanting to.

We though maybe his very little desire to do anything was just low energy and recovering from the GA.

He hasn't improved at all, he's got worse, now he just lays there looking so sorry for himself, it's killing us see him like this, we took him into the petsathome vet where he had his treatment, they looked after him today keeping an eye on him, feeding him and medicating him, we are taking him back in the morning where they will do the same. The vet said that it may very well actually be his jaw which is the problem, is there anything that can be done? The general feeling I get from the vet is that there is little that can be done, if he doesn't pick up tomorrow we're not sure really what to expect. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Are you still syringe feeding him, as is necessary with all dental guinea pigs that cannot chew properly? He needs a food intake of around 120 ml per day to keep his weight.

The pets@vets have definitely not the experience to deal with dental issues. It also takes usually several rounds of careful filing to get teeth right if there is no misalignment. In the latter case, he would need regular dental treatment by an expert vet.

Yep I'm syringe feeding him, he's been getting his intake of Ox bow critical care, he is 800g was told 50ml per day?

I've been giving him 4 1ml syringes per hour which is what weve been told by the vet, plus 0.3 metacam twice a day.

They now think it is not his teeth that cause his not eating, a few weeks ago he stopped eating it was the hottest day of the year we took him straight to the vet they gave us pain relieve after a few days he was back to his self again, then this episode happened out of the blue, my thinking is if it was dental we would have noticed something sooner? As this was all of a sudden.


If the jaw is the problem and not the teeth, is there anything that can be done for him?
 
If his jaw is out of alignment, I can pretty much guarantee it is a dental issue. Is there any way you can get Fudge up to see Simon at The Cat and Rabbit Clinic? Simon sees guinea pigs from all over the UK and has so much more experience than any other vet. I wish I could offer you a temporary place here at TEAS but I am currently full to capacity.
 
Where is Simon?

I think there is someone recommended around kent but we can't think of the name we need to look through posts on here to find the one
 
Fudges is not really visible all looks well and straight when looking at him face on, I think we will have to look a bit closer I would like to take him to someone I know has good , depending on what the vet at Pets at home says tomorrow I think we will have to take a drive up to Northampton, Its 2 hours from here so I think maybe a quick call tomorrow and explain and see what they say.
 
Fudge has been laying on my chest all evening, unable to do anything, all of a sudden I moved and he flipped out as if he was having a fit, now he is calm again, is this a normal thing? Should we be getting him to a vet?
 
no no no , please do not pts , i have had a copple of these , and you realy need to tetch him to
enjioy the syringe,
my sweet Polly , lived 3 more happy years eating syinge paste , in fack the cheeky little sow would follow
me around the room , and nudge my leg , to tell me when she whanted more ,

there important thing to bere in mind is that the pigs belly is big , but its actual stomack
is tiny in comparason ,
little and often ,
on average 3 to 4 x 15 mil fidreplex syringes will suerfice ,

also dont make the mistake one keeper made and that is to literly force feed a little sow
the sow died soon after, probabaly due to the keeper force feeding large amounts at one sitting
 
He's taking food ok, he just randomly flipped out from nothing, uncontrollable fit type, he's chilled now, the only way I can explain it was like trying to hold a live fish.

So stuck what to do, I feel as if vets give up on small animals and will put him to sleep, I also feel as if we are being cruel he's so sleepy but the nurse said it was the pain relief she gave him would make him like this

Mary is a fantastic lady with years of experance , she was part of Peter Gurnys team
she will never turn away a needey pig , though it will probebaly meen you turning
over the full time care needs to her

I've Google the name but no luck with anything been up with him all night he really flips out when we move him to put him in a more comfortable position
 
her full name is Mary Hinds , and she on the far side of sussex , i think it is about 30miles drive from
kent,
perhaps you could contact her vet, and leave a message , l am sur she will pass it on to Mary

Fudge has gone down hill rapidly

Gasping shallow breathing, we've made him comfy taking him to the vet at 9.

So sad feel like we have let him down, we have been syringe feeding him and giving him water yesterday after he came home he declined massively, we will be sure to use a specialist vet in future, we shouldn't be coming home with our pet and having to use the Internet to find information.
