I took Basil, Candy and Sugar from the Leyton Hoggy Posse to the Vets on Saturday. Basil and Candy just needed a quick check-up and are in rude good health.

Miss Sugar, on the other hand is not a well hoggy. I have been worried about her weight - she's thin like a cruelty case, you can feel all of her vertebrae. I thought it was the stress of losing Bumble, but she has an ovarian cyst, which feels as though it's about the size of a small marble. That's what has made all the weight drop off.

The vet says that he could operate, but the last 3 that he's done have not gone well; he managed to bring them round and send them home, but the piggies all died shortly after. Sugar is 5-ish and I am not keen to put her through an op which will probably kill her (and make her very uncomfortable to boot).

In the meantime, however, she is bright eyed and bushy tailed, eating like 2 guinea pigs and still the same nosy little minx that I love to bits. The only thing, though, is that her nose seems to be a bit blue (anyone any thoughts on why, she seems warm).

Anyway, I've decided to let nature take its course and send her across the Bridge when she is too ill to go on. I assume that she will get squeaky and uncomfy when picked up, but if any of the wise ones out there have any info on this sort of thing, I'd be grateful for any advice. I don't want to take a minute away from her, but don't want her to suffer either.

Samantha

PS: Of course, this means she can have all the fruit she wants. Hurrah!

I'm sorry that Miss Sugar is poorly and I wish I could give some advice about ovarian cysts but I have not had any experiences with them. I'm sure there will be someone along who may be able to point you towards possible treatment. I have some info so I hope that this helps.

I'm sorry to hear that your girl has been diagnosed with this. I do bring some advise which I hope you find helpful...

Hormone injections! Surgery isn't the only answer - really it should only be a last resort. HCG Chorulon shots shrank my girls' ovarian cyst right down; at her last appointment I think it was gone altogether. Some people advise an ongoing course, but Lottie was treated at the CCT and had two injections (0.2ml subcut) four weeks apart, and the same a few months later.

Even if the cysts are very large, they can be drained via a needle inserted in the abdomen. The CCT do this with no anesthetic, but personally I would ask for some degree of sedation/local anesthetic.

If neither of those options work, then a spay would be advisable.

I wonder what anesthetic your vet uses with piggies, and what suture material etc. Maybe they are playing a part in the difficulties his past clients had. I understand your hesitation and I wouldn't be comfortable letting the vet operate either.

I'm so sorry to hear about Sugar; I've not had experience of cysts at all, although it would be worth investigating the possibility of the hormone injections that have been suggested. It does sound as though in herself Sugar is feeling fine, so it seems at the moment that she's not suffering in the least. But truly, I'm really sorry, and am sending soothing vibes to her, and hugs to you ..... such a worry after losing your two boys.

I've never had a guinea pig with an ovarian cyst - are they painful to the piggy? ?/ If not I would be inclined to leave her if she isn't in pain. I know I have had one that was painful but I had a 9lb baby booting it every five minutes rolleyes but I know some people have them and don't know they have them and they don't cause any pain.

Sorry to hear about Miss Sugar. I'm just wondering if there's something more than an ovarian cyst going on here. Cysts can get very large before they cause too much discomfort to the piggie and I wouldn't have expected a cyst that size to cause such weight loss - especially as she is still eating so well. Very much agree with the other comments on draining cysts and hormone injections in preference to surgery. I would try to get a second opinion - the CCT can let you know vets in your area which are good with piggies.
Good Luck.

Thanks all

I'll look into those hormone injections. The vet said that the other guineas didn't seem to be able to take the drop in pressure in their abdomen. Don't know how big they were, or if that's right. He has operated sucessfully on all but one of my babies; Sugar had a breast lump taken away last year, which turned out to be just fatty tissue and it's coming back. He's been an excellent vet and I've just been really unlucky with my guineas this year, but then again the boys were quite old.

Perhaps it is a heady combination of age and the stress of losing Bumble, along with a cyst that has made her so skinny. Or maybe it is a tumour. I agree, if she were at her usual fighting weight, I'd give it a shot as she is my favourite.

Both the vet and I think that she is too underweight to risk it - weighed her last night for the first time in years. She usually weighed in at between 1kg-1100g. Last night, she was 765g, so she's lost over a quarter of her weight, possibly up to a third. She was alone for 5 weeks (Bumble died the day before I went on hols and then it took a while to find the right companion for her), but Candy has been with her 3 weeks and she's still as skinny, despite getting stuck in at the trough (oats twice daily).

Ah well, a raid on Tesco is planned. Need more guinea mix, she's eating for at least 3!

Miss Sugar - Update

Miss Sugar passed away last night. There's something about her in the Rainbow Bridge forum.

This thread is more than 2 years old, and I don't think it's a very appropriate comment regarding a guinea pig who has sadly died.
