MISSING A MOLAR TOOTH – advice needed 
My guinea pig Birke has a gap between two molars where food/fibers get stuck. There’s a possibility he has had this for almost 2 years, but it’s only recently that things have started getting trapped there. It has happened 3 times in 2026.
I use a very skilled exotic guinea pig vet, and the rest of his molars and incisors look great. He also eats normally and without difficulty on a daily basis.
I’m currently looking into whether there are any more specialized solutions within guinea pig dental care — to help avoid future incidents where a hay strand gets lodged in the gap.
For example:
• Whether the tooth surfaces can be slightly adjusted/filed so things are less likely to get stuck
• Whether anyone has experience protecting or filling the gap between the teeth
• Maybe a non-toxic gel that could create a protective barrier over the gum?
In humans, it’s sometimes possible to work with fillings or protection for gaps between teeth. I know guinea pig teeth grow continuously
But I’m wondering if there might be some kind of non-toxic material that could safely wear down over time and perhaps reduce the problem a little.
Or maybe some kind of protective gel/spray for the gums, so hay strands are less likely to dig down into the gum tissue.
He has been on Timothy hay for the past year because of bladder stones, but now I’m wondering if I should switch to meadow hay since it’s softer — maybe that could reduce how often strands get stuck in the gap?
