Missing nail and bleeding

Hi, I just noticed small blood stains in my piggy's cage, and I discovered that they came from his nail, which is actually missing. Why do you think it happened? I'm not sure did it just fall off or maybe he pulled it away by accident. It still bleeds a little and I'm not sure how to stop it. He's licking his paw often, should I stop him from doing that or maybe it's his way of healing?

When one of my pigs did that, I put her paw on a piece of kitchen roll over an ice cube and that seemed to help. It looked like it bled a lot, but it quickly stopped. However, I'm no expert so others may have better suggestions. Ripped nails are not at all unusual. make sure that the rip is no longer bleeding after about 10 minutes; otherwise try styptic powder or flour. See a vet it the quick is injured and the bleeding continues.

You can disinfect it with saline solution, which you make by stirring 2 teaspoons of salt in 1 pint/500 ml of boiled cooled water.

Thank you very much, it bled longer than 10min but I guess it's because he was always nibbling and maybe even slightly biting that paw, it seems like the bleeding stopped now. I have a mat with baby piggy paw prints in blood and a ruined tee shirt after that.
It didn’t seem to bother her at all.
I have no idea to this day how she did it.
Yes it is ordinary baking flour that helps stop the bleeding

In a pinch, yes you can use ordinary any cooking flour you have in the house. You should be OK if it has stopped and now and is not continuing to bleed.
