Misty has chest infection

Misty has got another chest infection and I'm really worried this could be it for him :( Yesterday morning I noticed he hadn't ate anything but his basil during the night so had a look at him and noticed he was breathing fast like last time he had one. Mum came in not long after and could notice the same thing so phoned up the vets and soonest we could get seen was 5pm. I wanted to go somewhere with Cheeko so I went somewhere local to take him a walk so I would be back intime but dad text me to say mum had went down to vets just after I'd left because she couldn't sit watching him like that any longer. He got given 3 injections (antibiotic, metacam and anti inflamitry I think) and his chest sounded crackly so he has a chest infection and was to go back again this morning for 3 injections again. He wasn't eating much yesterday but his eyes brightened up and he was munching on some hay. He was put in livingroom by himself and had vicks put in hot water next to his cage. Mum was dreading looking this morning incase something had happened but he was just the same. She took him down to vets and vet said his heart is still going really strong but his lungs are very crackly and she thinks he looks a bit blue round the mouth. He's to go back tomorrow morning again but if we think he's any worse just to go down right away. He's been getting his sides patted aswell. We tried to make the bathroom steamy but the thermostat thing on the shower has broke so we can't even do that. Vet said he's not out the woods yet but right now he's got towel over his cage with vicks outside the cage but the towel covering it so more of it goes in. Is there anything else we can do? He's getting fed critical care and pureed food but he was eating basil this morning and has been eating some hay.

I'd keep up the critical care and extra water as well maybe?
Have a chat with Debbie her vet Simon uses a drug zithromax (sp) and has had some wonderful results.........give her a pm :)

Just a thought, i'd offer little tid bits of his fav foods and literally hand feed this keeps the gut going and i truly think it keeps them interested in food as you know they can go off it so dam quickly.

He's getting water and critical care and pureed food. Yesterday for the first few hours he wasn't wanting to leap up after being fed it but it must have been once the drugs kicked in he started wanting to leap up after having it. I'll give her a pm thanks. Problem is tomorrow I have pass plus at the same time he has the vets and I can't cancel it because I'll get charged £70 for nothing so I'll be out driving and worrying about him :( The vet said there's an injection he can get to dry up the mucus but it'll only make the problem worse. The last time him and Sam both had chest infections at the same time and both weren't getting much better so they were going to try find a piggie specialist to see what else they could do but then both of them picked up. He could smell Holly on my hand last night and picked up a bit after knowing I'd been holding a girl :))
 
One thing you could try is liquidizing his fav treat then pouring it over his dry food. I did this to a rescue that wouldnt eat. His fav was cucumber and it worked really well, at first he could smell the cucmber but couldnt see it! But as the smell was so strong it got him moving around the cage.

Keep your appointment love (not sure what that is, is it a driving thing cause it sounds like it's a lesson or is it your actual exam? sorry but from OZ makes it a bit difficult to understand at times :red am learning tho)

Keep up the syringe feeding and offering him food his fav's and encourage him often to eat, even for a bit it all helps xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Glynis - Yes it's a driving thing. It's for driving on the motorway ect once you have passed your test.

He's getting fed and being given his water just now. He sounds more 'clicky' but I'm not sure if that could be because the mucus is more loose from the vicks. His nose isn't running and he's trying to eat some more basil. Would try and liquidize basil but I think it would be a hard job :))

When patting his sides you can hear one side is really bad compared to the other. He doesn't like it atall.
 
Garden next door doesn't cut their grass or anything so mums away next door getting grass and dandelion leaves for him to try eat. What you do for piggies rolleyes He's been eating his hay mainly so hopefully he'll eat those aswell.
 
hi if you really want to know basil with water in a blender works great,i find raspberries(not to many) and parsley really tickle my piggys tastebuds;)get better soon mistyxx>>>xx>>>
 
He would benefit from a one-off dose of Frusimide. This a diuretic which will help clear the fluid from the lungs.
Another useful drug is Bisolvon which helps "break up" the mucus.
These are both Prescription drugs. However, you can use Sudafed expectorant, about 0.2ml to help things.

Thanks but the vet doesn't want to use anything like that just now because she doesn't want it to dry him up too much or something:{. I'm not sure now whether we should ask the vet to give him one or not because he does seem a bit brighter. He was eating some grass then he lay down flat and just snuggled into my housecoat for 5 mins. Evertime I moved he'd wriggle along and snuggle up more. I feel the male vet knows alot more about piggies but I don't think he's working just now.
 
As far as I know, pneumonia is fluid-filled lungs. Chest infection is just that - an infection which can cause inflammation and "cold" like symptoms through the respiratory tract. An upper respiratory infection is one based in the upper part of the system, not deep down in the lungs.

Most URIs and infections have some degree of fluid in the lungs, thus most cases should have at least a one-off dose of diuretic (Frusemide/Dimazon/Lasix - all same drug!) at the start. Bisolvon is a secretolic so would help shift any mucus along and clear things up.

The diuretic really does make a world of difference for most pigs.

The last time he had a chest infection I emailed Thistle Cavies and they recommended a babys cough bottle but I can't remember if it had anything in it to get rid of mucus. Think it was Tryxilicks. (wrong spelling probaly)

When you tap his sides he sounds hollow. One side is alot worse than the other.

We're not sure whether to go back down with him or not yet.. Mum's going to try another vicks and see how he is in an hour or 2. I wouldn't say he's worse but I just panic so easily with him because he's my first piggie and has got me through so much.

I cannot understand the vet's "logic" in not wanting to dry him out too much.
I stand by my earlier posting that you should give him Sudafed, at the very least, if only because it is an over the counter remedy.
 
He's died 8...8...8... Took him to vets and left him for them to take him into an oxygn tent and to get frusemide but we were only away 5 mins and the vet turned around to get something and the nurse said she didn't like the look of him of and he just went into respiritory arrest 8... They done everything to try save him but it was to late. Mum went into Sainsburys on way up road and I told her to hurry up because I had a feeling something had happened to him then we got home and mum went upto neighbours to get Cheeko and I felt I just had to check the answer machine because I knew something had happened. Ran out to get mum to phone the vets back and she said he'd died. Before we left the vets he just didn't want to let go of me he was climbing right up me determind not to let go and just wanted to cuddle me. That's my 3rd piggy I've not been there for when it died and I feel so guilty. He got me through so much with Drs and hospitals and I wasn't there when he needed me the most 8... RIP Misty you'll never know how much you meant to me xxxxoxo
 
Have just caught up with this thread and I'm so sorry for your loss. What a terrible time poor Misty (and you) have had. However, you did all you could and didn't hesitate to take him to the vet which is the main thing. Hugs to you. x

I'm so sorry lolseh. Please don't feel guilty abut not being there. They know when you're thinking about them, when you are with them in spirit. Charlie was the same to me, I left him with Vedra to be PTS instead of insisting I stay with him. He did a lot for me, as Misty did for you. I still feel bad about it but I can still feel him with me. Misty will always be with you, in spirit and in your heart. Take care of yourself. *hugs* xx
