I've just given my piggies their weekly check & Mitch, my neutered boar has a scab above his nose. At first though it was some poo & went to clean it but it is a scab or similar. He's also got a crusty scab by his mouth. I've already got Minky booked into vets tomorrow so could take him too. Does anyone have any advise about what I can do to help him today?

Vets is best place but near mouth could be from acidic food or has one of the others had a go at him? I would clean then up for today and keep an eye on them.

Thanks for that, I've just had another look and the big scab above his nose has dropped off. It's quite clean so have just put a little Kamillosan cream on, it worked well on Minky last week after she had scabs. I'll leave the rest to the vet. Only other thing I could think may have anything to do with it is that they had a fresh sweetcorn husk yesterday, but it may be totally unrelated to that.

I had a guinea who used to suffer with scabs on his lips, i blamed giving him too much apple and some grapes, but I never knew it was that at the time.

The scabs were yellow in colour and you could literally pick them off when they were ready.

It was way before I joined the forum and new about acidy food, I took him to the vet, he blamed a cat doing it through his chicken wire in the run, I didn't know any different at the time and he never suggested it was apple.

it's funny looking back now, but they were literally on the guineas lips each side, quite big scabs as well.

Could it be a bit of fungal maybe just starting if you think it isn't his food?

When I re-checked, I found that one scab, the one that came off later was above his nose to one side & the other scab/scabs just below his nose to the other side. I'm taking him to the vets with Minky tomorrow so will post the outcome on here tomorrow afternoon.

Any news Stewy?

Yes, took Mitch & Minky to vet's this afternoon. She took a sample of hair and skin from Mitch in a area on his back which also had scabs & checked it under a microscope. She's pretty certain it's not parasites but more likely to be fungal similar to Minky. She's prescribed Imaverol to be applied to the scabs on both of them every 3 days starting today for 4 applications then take them back to see her. I'm also checking the others daily for any signs but they seem untouched by it. They're both eating well so not too worried unless it persists or spreads to others. Can't isolate them at present but she didn't think that was necessary. Busy again tomorrow, taking our latest foster boar, Rex for neutering, cyst removal & nail clipping. I've cut them as much s I dare, they'd been left to grow to about 2.5cm (1 inch) by their previous owner & were also twisted.

Your going through it at the moment matey :( Hope that clears it up for him..

Poor Rex, can't believe people let their nails get so bad :(

Glad Mitch & Minky are doing ok and that the patches/scabs are on their way to being treated...bless them.
Wow poor Rex, so pleased he will be more comfortable soon. poor little love :(

Sue & I have both fallen in love with Rex, he's got beautiful big eyes like a bush baby. I think it's going to be very hard not to adopt him ourselves. I'll do a separate thread about his op tomorrow.
