Hello all :)
I've been reading loads on this the last couple of days but have a couple of specific questions I can't find the answers to..

I suspect our boys have mites (we've only had them a week, they're 11 weeks old..) so I gave them their first dose of Beaphar (ivermectin) 2 days ago.

Does anyone have an idea of when they should be feeling less pain? I feel so guilty having held them, not knowing - they must have been in agony :(

Also, they have a play den during the day with towels etc. which I can just wash but how should I disinfect their wooden hutch? Really hesitant to use any chemicals.. Will white vinegar actually kill the parasites?

Thanks in advance!
Kate (and Teddy and Tiddles!)

Sorry to hear that your Guinea Pigs aren't well. I strongly recommend you get them seen by a vet as this ensures a correct diagnosis - and most over the counter remedies aren't the right dosage to deal with problems

I agree with the above. It would be much better to have them seen and treated by a vet.

With regards to cleaning, ensure that all bedding is washed at 60'C and use a veterinary disinfectant. These are safe to use with animals as that's what hey are made for. I would advise using either F10, Anistil or Anigene.

Eek, thanks ladies - I feel bad now. The general consensus I'd gathered was that treating parasites at home was commonplace. I will be booking them in at the vets asap. Thank you for responding

Don't feel bad. Let us know how your Guinea Pigs get on.

Good luck at the vets. Make sure you tell them what you have already used and what dose. Shop bought products tend to be only for maintenance and not to treat an outbreak as they are too low dosed. Even for maintenance they aren't really recommended though either.

As you have only had them for a week, I suggest that you contact the person you got them from and ask them to pay your vet bill as they obviously came to you with mites.
