Mite allergy

I caught all my sows in the big pen this morning to give them their routine Ivomec drop and noticed my peruvian sow had some sores on her skin where she's been scratching. She's had an allergic reaction to the mites (droppings to be precise) so she's had her Ivomec drop and some Savlon put on her sores and she's in one of my other cages on her own for a while until she's fully recovered. Its easier to catch and treat her while she's in a smaller cage rather than chasing her round the sow pen for ages. I've only had a few pigs have allergic reactions to mites, 90% of them never have any problems at all.

These mites are a damn nightmare,when mine start with them i always whip them straight into the bath,lol
 
I have some insecticidal shampoo and will give her a bath once her sores have healed. I don't really want to use shampoo on her while she has open sores.

I was speaking to my vet about mite treatments and she was telling me that I should resist treating them on a regularly preventive basis as they can build up resistance to the thingies in the meds that kill the mites - she seemed very knowledgeable on guinea pigs and rodents but we hadn't come across this view, has anyone else heard this?
 
I agree with your vet 100%.Ivermectin and Panacur should not be used on a regular preventative basis.,because the mites can build up a resistance.Worms in piggies are so rare that Panacure should only be used if a piggy is losing weight slowly and no cause can be found.Even so,in most cases the Panacur makes no difference.I do not beleive in putting chemicals into my pigs unless necessary as a treatment.I do not think anyone would give their kids insectisides every 3 months to stop them getting worms and nits,so why do it to the piggies.
