Right now, we have two male guinea pigs being treated for mites. They have 1 visit left to the vet for their last shot. When can I introduce them to our other new rescued males without them catching mites? Thank you in advance. :)

Can I ask why your intending to introduce them?

Boar trios rarely work and quartets even less often.

This is the posters daughter.
Thank you, we didn't know that. We only went piggie-crazy a short while ago..
We were only intending to introduce them just because.. well, we wanted to introduce them.
The person we took the new pigs from also gave us a pretty large cage compared to the one our original two are in right now so we thought maybe if they got along we could upgrade their cage and they could all be friends.
Thank you for the information!

connie ~ housing boars.

hi connie, don't know about anyone else but i have never been able to house two boars together except brothers, as along as they have never been seperated or been with a sow, the exception being if a boar has been wet nursed by another female who is already feeding her babies, hope this helps, kind regards, pookie.:)

We currently have our original two males together, they are father and son and get along quite well. :)

Lonely Charlie-Advise please!

Hi everyone,

I've just read your posts and this leaves me quite worried.

I have one guinea pig, his name is Charlie and he is three years old. I originally bought two but Harry died last year. He was quite upset but I had plenty of time to keep him company then as I was in my last year of university and then had the whole of the summer. I have recently started my teacher training and the course is very intense. I have a lot less time to spend with him and have notice a change in his behaviour, similar to when Harry died.

I have thought about getting him a friend to keep him company but your comments terrify me and I really don't want to cause him any more stress! At the same time I know that he is very lonely! What should I do?

Any advise would be much appreciated!

Kind regards,
Kym.

There are a good few rescues, many on this forum, who will help you pair up your male with another male, through a process called 'boar dating'!

Boys can be introduced, but it is best done with someone who knows what they are doing. Living happily together doesn't necessarily rely on the guineas relation to each other, it is mostly about personality - you don't get along with just anyone, and it's the same with piggies!

Maybe post this request in the rescue and rehoming section to find someone who does boar dating in your area.

Hopefully someone will read this post who knows a bit more!

Many members of this forum have boar pairs who have met and bonded at rescue centres. It is perfectly possible to find a new boar friend for a lonely boar.

Hello Pookie

If you take some time to read through the boar dating service thread, you will see that bonding males is common place. Perhaps with your limited numbers of males it has been a problem but when rescues carry out the dating there are a number of boars available so the chance of success is high. If the first round of dates do not work out the lone male can return when there are other boars to choose from.

For the original poster

Hi there! Learning is what this forum is all about, but if you have two happy pairs of boars i really wouldnt disturb them. They can fight to the dealth, and even if they dont they can cause serious lasting injury.

However its nice that you appreciate piggies like company. :))

For pookie

I myself have a boar pair that are inseperable. :) The trouble is boars can sometimes be picky about who they live with, but as suzy says she pairs boars up all the time and lots of forum members have happy boar pairs. :) We believe that being male is not a reason for a piggy to live on his own. Just the owners have to put in a little more effort to finding his companion. :) However this cannot be done if you dont know about the boar dating, obviously. :)

Pookie: Don't worry about it! Just because it's a boar doesn't mean it can't be introduced to a new piggie - we originally had two females. One died, and then we got the living one a new sow friend - who turned out to be a boy in disguise! When she got pregnant, we separated them and 21 days after birth the boy was introduced to his father and they're getting along just fine! They may be picky but from what I've read here duos usually work fine.

Can the two pairs meet at all? Like when we're cleaning the cages, can they go in the playpen together? And if they can, is it okay to do it if two of the boars are about to have their last mite treatment?

If they meet, they will have to organise dominance between them. Even if this didnt result in a fight it would be very stressfull for the piggies involved. Its really best not too. Sorry.

Hi everyone,

Thank-you for your advice, I am on to the quest!

Also does anyone know of any neutered females? or would that not work? Charlie isn't neutered and I know it would be easier to match him with a female. However, I would not want to put him under the stress of an operation. It would be heartbreaking!

I assume you are proposing to put a neutered female in with 1 male. More than one male would cause fighting.

It is possible to get neutered sows, but there is usually a long waiting list and they are often reserved for males who have

1. Tried boar dating more than once and failed
2. Are too old/sick to be neutered.
