My guineas have had a dose of ivermectin but one has scratched its back. What’s the best thing to do to help recovery please
Hi and welcome
Are you self-medicating or have you seen a vet?
Please be aware that you need to treat several rounds at the product specific interval and that broad spectrum ept shop products are not strong enough to do more than only suppress mange mites temporarily.
Please be aware that the first 48 hours of mange mite treatment will make the discomfort worse as the ivermectin is absorbed and the mites are reacting to it. After that, the mites should hopefully ease off noticeably but build up again towards the next round of treatment coming up. Two days after that, there should be no more itching in mild cases and a third round is only there to catch any stragglers.
In more severe cases, you may need four rounds or even more to clear the mites.
If a piggy has an impacted or lowered immune system for some reason, it can get mange mites badly very quickly and struggle more to fight them off.
Has your vet prescribed some painkiller to relieve the pain and discomfort or would they do so fo you?
I would also recommend to do a 3 week extra vitamin C booster to help the immune system to contribute to fighting off the mange mites.
You can use diluted F10 disinfectant to gently clean the open sores and prevent other bugs from getting in but be very careful to not trigger any seizures, which in turn can trigger strokes or damage the heart.
Try to make a little body suit out of an old sock with four leg holes to prevent your boy from biting himself raw and be at risk of seizures if he has them this badly. It needs to be pretty firm, otherwise your piggy will be able to wiggle out in a few minutes. Otherwise use a bandage as shown in this video of caring for a piggy with severe mange mites.
