I suspect my new 7 month old piggy of having mange mites. There's a small sore on the hump between his head and back, with some scaley looking skin. I pulled on some of the hair in that area and a tiny clump came out with some scaley skin stuff attatched on the bottom. I'm so scared. :(
I don't have the money to take two guinea pigs and 2 rabbits to the vet, are there any home remedies? Can I use cat flea stuff or something? I really can't afford the shots. I'm so worried. I have three cats that have been around him all day, plus my other new piggy. Somebody please help me. I'm about to cry I swear. That's how stressed I am. :(

Could I like put vaseline or bag balm on it or something to suffocate the mites?

Oh man, I hope someone replies soon. I have no idea what to do to cure, I wouldn't put vaseline or bag balm on him though because he might eat it. YUCK!

I'm so sorry this happened!

hi,get them to the vets,if its mange mites the vet will probably give you xeno or something like that. i would not use anything you have at home to be safe.good luck.x

also it could be fungal by the sounds of the hair coming out like that, please get to the vets asap as it can spread very quickly.x

you can buy xeno from vetuk online. Its about £20 and you get 6 treatments i think. Gorgeous guineas also do shampoos and balms to help with fungal. Ive heard of people using athletes foot cream on fungal before but ive never tried this myself and i'd research it 1st to make sure this is safe to do. Do you have a PDSA near you? If you have, and if you are on certain benefits you can take your guinea there and pay just a donation. Hope you get it sorted asp because it will get worse.x

I live in Canada. I think my mom's ordering Revolution online, but she's making me feel horrible about everything.

If it is fungal, would he still be scratching? Could I get some anti fungal shampoo at petsmart?

Sounds fungal to me. You need to get a nit comb and go thrugh his hair as uch as he will let you and get out the infected hair, it will easily come away. also get some nizoral shampoo from a chemist and give him a bath. You need to leave the shampoo on for a good 10 min, watch he doesnt groom though. You may nee to do this more than once. With one of mine it took two baths to get rid. You also need to get an anti fungal cage srpay and scrub every inch of the cage. Throw away anyhting wood/cardboard. if he has been on your carpets etc this will need to be sprayed to.

Also you should think about some sort of vet fund savings account. what would you do if somehting really seriuos happened?

Please have your piggy seen by a vet to get a proper diagnosis and the appropriate treatment. Fungal and mites are often not as easy to distinguish, especially not for the unexperienced. Untreated or wrongly treated mites can kill.

We can't give you a safe diagnosis over the internet; members on here can only hint at avenues to pursue. Not all posters are experienced owners. It is your responsibility to have your piggy properly treated by a qualified person.

I agree with Wiebke, you need to get them to a vets to confirm what exactly it is, but they will either give you a spot on (like for fleas with cats) or a shampoo to bath them in - depending on whether it's mites or fungal.

thanks, I called a pet store looking for anti fungal shampoo, and i described what was going on to the lady and she said it was scurvy. So I bought him a bunch of veg, and hopefully he should be okay. If it doesn't go away, I'm gonna for sure bring him to a vet when I get home.
