I haven't been on here for a while....but I've just cleaned my boys out and found some little browny creepy crawlies on the dry nites. Neither of them are scratching or have anything on them as I can see but as they are on the floor in my bedroom I am now paranoid I am going to be infested with something! I can see them, they don't jump when I swat them, they are tiny but vary in size.......could they be hay mites!? They were all in the hay area. If so what can I use on the carpet to make sure they don't spread and should I bath the boys in insecticidal shampoo even though I can't see any on them......bruiser is white and short-haired so would have thought I would spot them? Any advice gratefully received.

I found some of these too and was also very confused what they were when I cleaned my boys out the other day.

My boys have been booked into the vet and they are going this weekend as I'm unsure what they are.

Please let me know *** the say......I've removed the straw house they had as this ad some in and used a different make of straw this morning. I've checked them over again today and can't see anything on them........very strange.

You have the choice between running lice, which tend to be white, yellowish or buff, or static lice/fur or hay mites (same thing, just different names), which come in shades of light brown to dark and look like somebody has sprinkled pepper over the rear end of a piggy. You treat both the same way, as for lice. If they make a reapprearance and you are worried, please see your vet. He will prescribe his own treatment.
Gorgeous guineas have a pretty good shampoo:

Please do not use straw for guinea pig; they need unlimited hay (which should make up to 80% of the daily food intake). With straw, your piggies are also running a much higher risk of eye injuries and scratches.

If they are just on the bedding where it has got damp with wee and not on the piggies themselves it is also they are a type of tiny black fly, attracted to such conditions, when disturbed they crawl away rather flying so appear more like creepy crawleys than flies.
