Hi I bought a guinea pig a few days ago, he's not my first guinea pig I've had them all my life but this is my first in my own house! When I got him home I was holding him and I'm a bit of a germ/bug freak so I was going though his fur and I saw what looked like lice/ maybe mites they were little yellowish worm like things. I suffer from dermatitis and they've already started to make me itch! My guinea pig lives in a cage with vet bed with an unlimited supply of hey, water. Anyway back to the subject I've booked him in at the vets they told me the consultation with cost £14.50 which I thought was good as our dogs cost a bomb! But I'm just wondering if anyone could tell me how much the treatment might cost please. Sorry for rambling on aha just don't want it to cost the earth. Thanks in advance :)

Hey!
I also suffer from dermatitis and know exactly how you feel!
For this reason I bath bramble in Guinea Pig lice and mite shampoo once a month and it keeps my itching at bay and makes her smell beautiful.

I also don't imagine the treatment to cost much, the most I have ever paid at the vets for Guinea Pig Treatment is £20 and that was for antibiotic eye cream. If your worried you can phone up and ask the vets beforehand, that's what I usually do. Vet's understand that money is tight and they want you to be able to get the best for your animal. They might be able to help you out. :)

Just to add. It sounds like running lice, if its a bad case it is best to see the vets however make sure you chance all the bedding in the cage when you get back and invest in some special lice shampoo incase you get any tough cookies. :)
Here's some info on lice:

My skin drives me mental! So I can't imagine how he feels poor baby. thanks for the advice what shampoo do you use? And his appointments tomorrow at 5 so I'll ring them tonight.

@helen105281 :) they will prob give you a dip to wash him with Helen is very much in the know about this topic. I have experience with mites and they burrow under the skin. My boys are hairless so wont get running lice.I had a consultation and an ivermectin injection for mites and it was 31.50 total :)

Awww thank you :) I'll just have to wait and see what they say tomorrow . I've alway fancied a skinny pig but can't seem to find a breeder round where I live!

This forum is pro rescue hun so please use the rescue locater if you decide to get another. Why buy when there are so many unwanted piggies we could give a forever home to x

It really depends on the type of lice or mites it is. Treatment can be with Ivermectin but if they are on the surface then I would recommend bathing in an lice shampoo. I personally use Lyclear Crème rinse but others use specific guinea pig shampoo. Whatever shampoo it is you must patch test behind the ear for 48 hours. A vet visit is a good idea though to get a proper diagnosis. Any bathing should be done at least 24 hours apart from any Ivermectin treatment.

Hi Helen where can i buy lyclear crème rise from? I'm still going to the vets tho just to be on the safe side

I would just use xeno 450 at £16.99 it has 6 pipettes which is correctly dosed and you only need 3 for a course of treatment. You use 1 per week for 3 weeks and it should clear it. I also use Gorgeous Guineas lice n easy shampoo which can be 48 hours after treatment :)

Where do you get it so cheep ? I can only find it for £25 online

Depends on the pig, weights don't really give you much of a guide to age. If you are seeing the vet tomorrow I would wait & see what the vet says because if they give you the treatment you won't need to send off for any online & the vet will give you the correct treatment after seeing them on your piggy :)

I really recommend getting piggies insured, vet bills can become very expensive so it is a good idea to save some money every month or get insurance from somewhere like Exotics Direct who insure piggies. They are not cheap pets, as I have found out myself :) I have 3, one of which has cost me nearly £2,000 in the last 2 years, she isn't insured & my other 2 have cost around £600 each for various ops & treatment, they are insured.

The most a guinea pig cost me (mum and dad as I was young) was 150 pounds as he had an abscess on his cheek sadly he didn't make it, as he stopped eating. We did try syringe feeding as the vet said it was an option but he died in my arms at around 4 am in the morning so sad one of my best piggies

We went to the vets last night and she gave me some Xeno 50 as he's only small weighing 400g as he's a baby piggy so we are on the mend :) yay cost me 36 pounds so now I know they treat him with this if it happens next time I'll be ready with my scales and I'll be ordering it online thanks everyone for you help and advice it really helped a lot deffo going to start bathing him tho (when treatment is over)
