Hi,

As the title says, can anyone tell me if they think this is mites or bites?

Thanks :)

Sorry, but I can't tell from these pics. I hope that you have booked an appointment with your vet?

It is hard to see from the photos Nicola although you do get a general idea. Does the pig live with another pig, any signs of disagreements between them that would make it possible for it to be bites? It is possible that the pig is biting and scratching at him/herself due to mites.

Thanks Laura,

She's a baby i bought from a pet shop on Thursday along with her sister. They are in with two adult sows. When i got her i put them in the indoor run for a few hours to observe them, everything seemed (and still does seem) absolutely fine.

The most i've seen is the adult pigs giving her a wee nudge occasionally, and i haven't heard anything other than the usual rumbling and squeaks. They live in my lounge.

That's why i wondered if it could be something else. It is at the bottom of her back and the patch is bald with lots of little red marks that look like tiny cuts. There is a smaller patch further up too.

The other baby is fine.

Hi

I bought two babies from a large pet shop last summer and they were crawling with lice =(
Luckily i used some shampoo and they cleared up. I cant see your pics clearly but my guess is it could be something they have picked up in the petshop. especially if it was a bigger store. they dont seem to care much either i rang them after treating mine and they basically said so what!
Good luck with whatever it is!
Hannah

From your last post I would be inclined to suspect mites, the patches are in the right place on the body to be self-inflicted; it's probably worth treating her for mites.

Do you know how old she is?

Thank you

Will get stuff for them tomorrow. I'm guessin i need to treat them all? What do i ask for?

She's tiny so i'd guess she's 8 - 10 weeks.

Ivermectin treatment is ideal for mites. I think weight is going to be a better indicator than age in this case, although obviously with her being very young you will need to consult a vet to be sure you can safely treat her.

Xeno 50 topical (spot on) ivermectin is good for pigs weighing under 800g but having her treatment monitored by a vet would still be advisable given her age.
