mites, p@h and a huuuuge vet bill!

Well, not sure if you remember be saying or not but my piggies got hay mites, i bought some of the 'spot on' stuff which got rid of most of them but not all, so bought some stuff from gorgeous guineas which i dont need now grrr!

Anyway i emailed p@h as it was from their hay, they emailed me back and told me to take it back to the store i purchased it from and ill get my money back which i did this morning the manager (i think he was the manager) asked me if id had to taken them to the vets *white lie* ''yes i have'', he said bring reciepts in and we'll refund you :))

Went to the vets and he has prescribed some similar 'spot on' stuff which is stronger, they need some putting on tomorrow, then 2 weeks later and then 4 weeks after that. he said seen as though p@h are paying he will just give me 2 full packets (12 pipettes in total!) so ill have an extra 3 left over incase it happens again :) that came to a total of £69.94 and he charged £12.30 for examining 1 small animal, left the other 2 in the box so the total vet bill was £82.24 :o:o went back to p@h with reciept and the history of what vet did etc and they paid me the full money in cash :))

I was bad mouthing p@h because of their hay etc, but i very much doubt an ordinary pet shop would have done that, so still may use their hay should it happen again at least ill know that they will pay the vet bill :))

The vet looked at the sex of the one who is a girl and yes she is, he said that they cant get pregnant this young though :{they are 13 weeks old! have been together nearly 5 weeks now too and have been caught erm making love yesterday but if she is pregnant then guineas literally balloon inbreeding ive read everywhere else though that boars need to be seperated at 3 weeks old because they can breed from them.
 
A boar can impregnant a sow from 3 weeka and sows can get pregnant from 4 weeks.

I'm a little confused. Is it Lice or Mites the pigs have got? Lice comes in off the hay and isn't serious just wash in Lice N Easy and they will be fine.

Mites is a little more serious and happens during times of stress.

If it has come from the hay then it is Lice and not mites that the pigs have. :)
 
oh right, i looked on the internet and it looks like they had hay mites. when i took them to see the vet i told him thats what i thought they had and tried treating it. he had a look and agreed :{
 
There is every chance she is pregnant, sows can become pregnant from 4 weeks of age, Also not all sows "balloon" in pregnancy my little Amber managed to hide 2 babies from us and due to the length of gestation pregnancy is far from obvious in the early stages.
 
You really need to seperate them pronto. If she's not already pregnant then she might well be soon and she's too young, not to mention the whole moral thing where there are too many guineas in the world as it is.

Lice are small white/grey/yellow things which you can see moving in the fur when you part it. These are treated by using Lice and Easy from gorgeous guineas. They can sometimes be gotten rid of by using spot on, but it's not always 100%.

Mites are life threatening, and cause itching, hair loss and scabs. You can't see them. These are usually treated with injections from vet as that is a quick method. Some vets will give spot on though. Whichever, mites always need a vet trip.
 
Yes they need to be separated today. Boars can start making sows pregnant from the age of 3 weeks. Good to hear that you got your money back from Pets at Home though.
 
hi, i was always told by a fantastic bun vet that mites live under the skin in every healthy animal and only come to the surface and annoy them when they are ill or stressed..lice are pests that come in on hay or straw etc
whether its lice or mites you still need to treat them though...we use an insecticidal bun/guinea shampoo...though a vet trip may be needed to give them something stronger if that doesnt work
 
I'm sorry but insecticidal shampoos are not safe for guineas. And they do not get rid of mites. The only thing that gets rid of mites is Ivermectin, from the vet.
 
Caviesmum - you are right about mites usually showing through stress or illness and invermectin (spelling?) is needed to treat this.
I personally wouldn't an insecticidal shampoo on piggies because it might be too harsh for thei skin and you don't really know what is in them.

Yes a sow can get pregnant alot younger than 13 weeks.

Princess, my blind little sow, had a litter at the age of 14 weeks .... that meant she came to me expecting and that she must have been just 4 weeks old when she got pregnant.

It is not good for a sow to have a litter so young as she should be growing at that time herself. Princess is still tiny by comparison to her sister, I have my doubts that she will ever be a proper size.

I would advise you to change your vet to someone who knows a little more about guinea pigs. rolleyes
