Maddykins
Junior Guinea Pig
I'm having a right panic, because I just went to check on my pigs, and I saw a little fly in the cage which I quickly killed thinking nothing of it but then under closer inspection I noticed tiny black dot that was moving on a towel in their cage, and then I killed that...and then I saw a few more if I looked very closely. Is this mites? They looked like the tiny things that sometimes you find in old books?
I quickly cleaned the pigs out and disinfected all the cage and took out and disinfected the hideys that were in their cage (I've left them all out with disinfectant to soak) and put different ones in. I'm worried that they came from the hay but the they've been using this hay for awhile and I haven't noticed any before, and at this time of night and without transport I can't get a new bag of hay until tomorrow morning and I can't leave them for that long without hay so I had to put more in but I've tried to limit it to a corner litter tray, obviously they will no doubt make a bit of a mess but at least it won't go alllll over the cage. Or could it be something they picked up when they were in the garden on the grass a couple of days ago? I don't know much about mites, or if they even where mites that I found?!
I was sitting with them for a good hour whilst I did that and then fed them and observed them, and they both seem happy and healthy and there was no itching at all. Should I still be worried?
Any advice/tips? They've never had mites before and I don't know much about it and I worry about them loads, argh!
