I'm having a right panic, because I just went to check on my pigs, and I saw a little fly in the cage which I quickly killed thinking nothing of it but then under closer inspection I noticed tiny black dot that was moving on a towel in their cage, and then I killed that...and then I saw a few more if I looked very closely. Is this mites? They looked like the tiny things that sometimes you find in old books?

I quickly cleaned the pigs out and disinfected all the cage and took out and disinfected the hideys that were in their cage (I've left them all out with disinfectant to soak) and put different ones in. I'm worried that they came from the hay but the they've been using this hay for awhile and I haven't noticed any before, and at this time of night and without transport I can't get a new bag of hay until tomorrow morning and I can't leave them for that long without hay so I had to put more in but I've tried to limit it to a corner litter tray, obviously they will no doubt make a bit of a mess but at least it won't go alllll over the cage. Or could it be something they picked up when they were in the garden on the grass a couple of days ago? I don't know much about mites, or if they even where mites that I found?!

I was sitting with them for a good hour whilst I did that and then fed them and observed them, and they both seem happy and healthy and there was no itching at all. Should I still be worried?

Any advice/tips? They've never had mites before and I don't know much about it and I worry about them loads, argh!

Check your bag of hay for them. It sounds like hay mites. I had them too the other month. You'll be able to see hay mites crawling about in it.

If it's not coming from the bag of hay check their fur for lice.
the mites they carry are invisible to the naked eye. X

I will buy them a new bag of hay early tomorrow morning when the pet store opens. Do you think it would be ok to buy the same brand or should I avoid that and buy a different one?

Do I need to bath the pigs or treat them with anything? Like I said I haven't obseved any itching although I will keep a close eye on them.

Were they in the bag of hay?

if so, Just throw the hay away and change it all out with fresh stuff tomorrow if you dont have any different hay. You might find some strays wondering about over the next few days. Just get rid of them as you see them.
I wouldn't go to the same place or buy the same hay just now until they get new stock. It's happened to me a couple of times with different hays. Seems to happen alot to me with shop bought hay. I only use the shop stuff as bedding boxes in their cage which they just soak in pee within 24 hours so I only use good stuff in their racks. The Bob martin one seems to be creepy crawly free for me so far and the big one from b&ms.
You don't need to treat the pigs they won't harm them. They only like the damp mustiness of the hay anyway not your pigs :)
