what are the actual signs of mites in piggys? mine have both been to the vet and i was told guinea pigs like to scratch and bite anyway. so how do i know if they have mites?

also, how much does it roughly cost for the vet treatment from mites?

Hi! where are you located? Prices around the world vary widely. Good quality high dosed ivermectin is not quite cheaply. Please do not home treat on spec with cheap broad spectrum products from a pet shop that are pretty useless for both an acute attack (too low dosed) and that can contribute towards making mange mite eggs resistent rather than prevent an outbreak.

Here is an article about mange mites, which are invisibleto the naked eye. if your piggies really have got mites, you should notice an unmistakable intensity and frequency to the scratching and biting as the discomfort is growing and the hair in the affected areas that your piggy can get to is coming out. One of the very earliest sign is a grumpy piggy that suddenly doesn't like being stroked along the back anymore. The classic sign of hair loss is a triangle on the back, but not all mange mite attacks start out like that. Most guinea pigs with a fully working immune system can keep the mange mite eggs in the skin under control, but young and old age, stress and illness can lower the immune system.
