I've just bought a young female guinea pig from a pet store. I adopted another female guinea pig 2 weeks before. I noticed that my new guinea pig ( Raisin) was scratching alot in one particular area. I found small scabs in one area along with hair loss in that same area. I'm not sure what type of parasite this is, but I don't see anything in her fur at all. I hope someone can help :)
 
Best to check with a vet; sounds to me like it could be a fungal infection but a vet will confirm for you and make sure you get the right treatment for your piggy :)
I love the name Raisin btw! :)

Hi and welcome

Please have her vet checked, so you can treat exactly for what she suffers from. From your description we can only guess whether it is mange mites, ringworm (fungal infection) or hay mites (whose tiny egg cases are visible). Fungal and mites need different treatment, but in any case better one than cheap low dosed broad spectrum shop stuff that is not effective in clearing an acute case.

You can reclaim any vet cost from the shop that have been incurred in the first two weeks after the sale if you present thevet bill together with ythe sales receipy as exposure and infection must have happened at the shop. It comes under the heading of selling damaged ware.

Have your two girls been in contact with each other? In this case you will need to treat both.
 
I agree that it’s best to get the vet to check and get the correct diagnosis and treatment for them.

Hi!
Raisin doesn't have vet appointment yet ( but she will), I've just noticed that her hair started growing back ( the scabs are consequently disappearing).
I also have been checking her fur twice a day to see if I can find anything in her fur, but I don't... Do you think she could be recovering? In any case, I will take her to the vet to be sure...

Mange mites you can't see and the eggs are burrowed in the skin. It may be that she is recovering, but if Raisin was one of my piggies, I would have had her vet checked in any case to make sure that it cannot come back any time soon!
 
Just to add that when our Eddi had mites neither the vet or I ever saw anything on his hair or skin.
Sample of both were examined multiple times under high powered microscopes, and still nothing.
But he definitely had mites and the correct treatment meant he improved very quickly and was much happier afterwards.

Of course! Her vet appointment is on Friday.
