My poor girl Izzy has mites, I noticed it today while she was having a bath, she has a lot of missing fur on her bum, a bit scabby and dandruffy. I put some powder on the scabs and some cream on the skin. I'm off to pets at home to get some Beaphar Anti-Parasite Spot-On treatment tomorrow, and i'll be cleaning out her cage tomorrow too.
I've just got a few questions -

1. Can mites spread? She's kept with another girl in the same hutch, and is brought out with the other two girls quite often.

2. I keep all of my guinea pigs in my shed - will they all need to be treated? I have 4 boys as well as the 4 girls, obviously the boys haven't been brought out with her but I have probably touched Izzy and then touched the boys.

3. How many treatments will she need? I know it's one pipette, at least twice, about 10 days apart, but i hear some have it 3 times?

4. I gave her a bath today with Johnsons Insecticidal Shampoo, so will I have to wait before giving her the ivermectin?

you would be better with ivermectin than the stuff from p@H - its more affective - its what the vets prescribe and in long run would be cheaper.

I would treat all your piggies, just to be on the safe side.
 
Your piggie should be treated for mites by your vet with Ivermectin. They can then give the correct dosage based on your piggie's weight. From what I remember mites cannot be caught by other piggies so I don't think you would need to treat them all and I think they have 2 treatments. I'm not sure about using the shampoo. Hope this helps :)
 
No the rest of them don't need to be treated if they aren't showing any symptoms of mites.:) I don't know about the pets at home stuff but you can get Xeno 450 from vet uk for about £16.:)
 
I just gor 4 tubes for £18 from my vet as two of my boars have mites. I'm treating all 4 boys just in case. Vet says I need to treat them all again in 2 weeks, then again after 4.
 
I've found the Beaphar Spot-On very effective for mites. Vets charge so much for pure Ivermectin and the Spot On, for me, has been just as good. I would treat all of your guinea pigs, and treat them all again in 10 days.
 
Hi my vet prescribed Xeno450 (ivo.) for my girls, I found that you can buy this off the internet cheaper (£20.53 incl. P+P, for 6 treatments) without a prescription. Also the vet is supposed to offer you a prescription for you to source any Prescription Only Meds from somewhere else if you wanted, might come in useful if you don't need the medication immediately and can save a bit.
 
Hi Nemo, how long is delivery on this stuff? What about shelf life? Fortunately not had a problem with mites but wonder is it worth having some stuff in, otherwise I would have to go straight to the vet for treatments to avoid delays, which looks like it is a lot more expensive? xx

Well the one I have which is the Xeno 50 and I got it about 3 months ago doesn't run out until February 2010 so I would imagine they would have at least a couple of years shelf life.:) I either got it the day after I ordered or the day after that but definitely within two days but that wasn't from vet uk it was from Pet vet but they were more expensive so I shall be using Vet UK from now on. I've ordered some things today from them and they are meant to be delivered within 48 hours so I will let you know how I go on with them. :)
 
Hi,

You need to ensure that you only use Timothy hay for the bedding, if not, then the hay is what brings the mites.
 
I don't think mites always come from the hay. If piggies get stressed then they can develop mites also :)
 
I've used the spot on from P@H the one that contains ivermectin, It worked really well no probs at all
 
Mites do not come from hay, Lice do. Mites just come out in times of stress
 
Hi all, hope someone can clear this up for me. I’ve had pigs for many decades and only a few have had mite. I have heard both explanations for mite from the vets but if Mites only come out in times of stress, does that mean that all guinea pigs are born with them? I have one piggy who is very mite prone and I have to keep a close eye on her, the others seem fine. Just wanted to try and reduce if possible her getting it again or any of the others. she is also the most laid back piggy I have ever come across, so if she is getting stressed I'm not sure what else I can do?!

Mites are dormant in a guinea pig - stress can bring on mites - lice are catchable from hay, but not mites.

The Beaphar spot on is an underdose for pigs over 1kg so it's pretty useless. Ivermectin should ALWAYS be dosed by weight and not a range of weights as stated on the packaging of that stuff. It's also so diluted that it's hard to get the full dose for a smaller pig on its skin. I would steer clear and get a vet to give you the proper stuff.

To be honest I'd get the pig checked out by a vet. Skin like that could be cause by mites or fungal.

I'd also recommend steering clear of the Johnson's shampoos as the ingredients are of questionable safety. Don't put anything on open wounds, especially not powder as it will do nothing but irritate them.
