The last day or two I have noticed my younger boar Furio chewing his back a little. I got him out today to patch test him with a shampoo I have bought and noticed he was itchy on his back. No missing hair but really loved me having a little scratch there!
Close scrutiny in parted hair showed he has a few tiny little white wriggly creatures in his hair :(. Tiny, sort of nit sized. I'm assuming these are mites?
Other pig seems fine - not itchy and cant find any on him but I'm assuming I will have to treat both?

Where on earth have they come from and how do I destroy the little monsters?

Shall I put bath-time on hold or will it help soothe? (this will be first bath).

Young pig is about 16 weeks, older one about 9 months.

Thanks in advance!

They are lice, not mites. http://www.gorgeousguineas.com/parasitic.html

Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas does a Lice n Easy shampoo that has excellent results getting rid of them :)

Mites are not visible to the naked eye, so as Niki said it would appear you saw lice!

Bathing treatments (Lice 'n' Easy is the most popular, from www.gorgeousguineas.com) are generally done once a week for 2-3 weeks. A human nit comb and a conditioner is also invaluable, I found using the comb made quite a big difference in the reduction of the lice after each wash (as opposed to simply shampooing, soaking and rinsing).

Ordered the shampoo but cant pick it up until Monday now as the Post Office isnt open Sundays :(.
Will bath them both on Monday night :). Hope one bottle does them both 2-3 times :red

It should last more than that - I have done 2 pigs twice and have loads and loads left and no lice! On the plus side the hair is like they just stepped out of the salon - seriously shiny! :)):))

Hi guys

Shampoo'd both pigs on Saturday, they were seriously unimpressed and despite my best efforts blowdrying them, wrapping them in a succession of towels and cuddling them they still shivered away and made me panic they were going to die of cold.
But, two very shiny pigs and not a single louse on either. Will bath again this saturday just to be 100% sure and make the baths a more regular thing. Will make the water warmer this time too - think I was over conservative and made it too cold.
