Does anyone know if a guinea pig has mites how long it takes for them to lose hair? I know this is a clear sign of mites... and I have been known to be very paranoid about my piggies health. I have been thinking it's my imagination but they are all scratching... not sure if it's excess or just an itch. I just don't want to treat them if they don't have mites, the girls did look to have a bit of dandruff but that was it.

Ah.... to treat or not to treat that is the question!

When mine have had mites they've all reacted to different degrees; some have had the typical "V" shape hairloss, some have had a thinning of hair, some have had none, one bit himself & caused wounds (overnight) but all have scurfy skin & are extremely sensitive to my touch & do wheek :)

I have scratching and lots of it! Nothing else really... I wish there was an easy way to tell if they have them or not :(!

The pigs have mites, treat!

"I have scratching and lots of it"

Not so sure about Ivomec for you.

i used xeno 450 spot on for my piggies 1 pippet per guinea pig prevents mites or clears them up if * repeat 1 week after 1st dose then four weeks after. its done the job on my dopey and prevented the others getting them. hope this helps

none of mine had hairloss and they didn't look scurffy either but alas they have mites, if you are in doubt i would treat as a precaution rather than wait and see if it gets worse!

Already treated :)!

I used Xeno 450... Is it a week you repeat says on the package to reapply in a fortnight and a month?

I just worry about treating them when there is nothing wrong with them... but I did decide it is better to be on the safe side.

Mites have a tendency of cropping up when there has been a certain amount of stress, like a move. The eggs can lay dormant in the skin for months, just waiting for an occasion like that.

Repeat after 10 days.

Do you need to repeat just once or twice? Says on packaging to repeat in a fortnight... and then a month?

Would recommend bathing or just leave it?

You can give it in either a ten day or fortnightly rhythm - it doesn't make much difference. Three treatments are usually more effective than two.

If you want to give them a bath, do so shortly BEFORE you treat them for mites again, so the treatment is not interfered with.

My guinea pigs are nearly 13 weeks old. They don't constantly scratch but do seem to have intermittent intensive scratching sessions for 10 minutes or so. Can xeno 450 be used on this age gp?
Also, one of the group of 4 is pregnant (pet shop pregnancy)- she's in the pair that live with my friend; as we've only had them just over 6 weeks I've got mine on pregnancy watch just in case, although they've showed no signs to date (fingers and toes crossed). Can xeno 450 be used safely or should I wait?
Sorry to highjack the thread but can't find xeno in the local shops to read the packet. Will have to order online but want to make sure I get the right thing.

Thanks.

Xeno 50 can be use on the young piggies I'm sure. Xeno 450 is fine on older piggies over 800 grams.

Doesn't say if it can be used on pregnant piggies...

www.vetuk.com is the cheapest place to get both xeno.
