On Tuesday I gave my girls their first application of Xeno 450 spot-on and have been searching through the old threads on mites looking for any mention of the timing for the next dose as the packet says 14 days but I thought I had read on here it was beter to give after 10 days (or am I imagining that?)

Anyway I came accross a thread about which cleaner to use in the cage to kill mites and so now I have more questions mallethead I thought mites couldn't survive if they weren't on the body, is this wrong? If so, should I disinfect everything and when would be the best time during their treatment to do it?
 
I don't believe mites could live off the body, and yeah I've heard 10 days too thats what the vet advises.... I was going to wait 14 days, but then I spoke to SAm and her vet told her 10days.
 
The Sellnick mite, (Trixacarus caviae (a burrowing sarcoptid mite) is a member of the arachnid family. Transmission occurs primarily through direct contact with infested animals although eggs can be carried to them inadvertently. Mites will seldom leave the host unless brushed onto the bedding or as a result of overpopulation or the death of the host. With no host, they will usually die within 3 weeks. However the eggs, which are laid in burrows in the skin, may survive independently for long periods of time. Harkness and Wagner believe some early reports of infestation of guinea pigs by Sarcoptes and Notoedres mites may have actually been caused by the Trixacarus mite, since they can easily be confused.

So if they die within 3 weeks can I assume any of the little blighters who tried to climb back on the pigs would be killed by the Xeno?
 
I'm assuming that they will die if they climb back on the pigs as the xeno will still be active in their skin and once the mites burrow/bite the xeno will be present and should kill them. :)
