I think one of my baby girls has mites. She has a balding patch above one of her eyes, and she itches a lot. Her sister is in the same cage as her, so I don't want her catching anything. What should I do? Do the 'mite sprays' from the pet stores work?

Can I self-treat, or should I take them both to the vet?

I think the lady who sold them to me knew that they had mites grrrr She was 'conveniently' telling us about them during the viewing. Should I contact her and ask her to pay the vet/medication bill, or would that be going overboard? I've only had the pigs for 4 days and there's no way they could have caught the mites/fungus here. Grr, I'm so mad >.<

Please don't self treat; see a good, piggy savvy vet!

Too many piggies go through sheer hell because their owners self treat, but not properly!

It was certainly not right for the person you got your piggies from not to be upfront about mites; she was obviously more interested in a sale than in the wellbeing of her piggies!

Okay. I'm a bit annoyed to spend money on vet bills so soon after getting them! I've spent a LOT of money this week setting up their cage and buying food/accessories etc. But they are obviously uncomfortable so I will take them to a vet as soon as possible!
We have a rabbit/guinea pig vet in my city, but they are almost an hour away. I don't want to stress out the piggies by taking them on such a long journey. I'll make an appointment with my local vet and see what she says.
Thanks for your help guys. I'll let you know how things go :)

Hi you might be able to get your local vet to chat to the cavy savvy one :) they often do chat sessions, my vet rang and spoke to a guy in both Sydney with our little boy we had a few years ago (RIP Dukey) and then also to a vet in QLD for one of my girls!
GOOD LUCK xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
