Tilly has had 2 injections for ear mites, the last one was a week ago, the vet said she could have another, but didn't think she would need one, as she things seemed to be better. she had a tiny bald patch on her back, but the hair was regrowing. But I think I have just noticed another one, unless it was there all along, and with bit bits of dried skin. I'm a worry pot, and now dont know to take her back for a 3rd injection......the injections are every 10 days, so i dont know if her 3rd one will have to be within the 10 days from her last.....or if she needs one at all, and if the injections will take a while to kick in? I know that going to the vets can be very stressful which can cause mites in the first place!

thanks

Mites arent caused by stress. Dermdex mange can be though. I would go back for the third injection. Better to be safe than sorry, i wouldnt want you to feel bad if you didnt go back and the mites returned. Just a short trip to the vets isnt enough stress to cause illness. Let us know what you decide.
Good luck.

thanks Abi nurse, i think i might take her back, it was actually the vet who told me that mites are around all the time, but they become a problem when they get stressed ? ? ! cheers for your help x

Please take her for the third round. Proper mites treatment always takes 3-4 rounds of some form of ivermectin (either injected or topical), spaced 10-14 days apart in order to kill any emerging eggs.

Unfortunately, eggs can survive in the skin for a long time and make a come back whenever the immune system is lowered, either through illness or stress (like moving into a new home). Mites can also come in the hay, so it is likely that you will be confronted by them at some point. As long as you treat promptly and properly, there is nothing to worry about. Injections are the most effective way of treating. Sometimes, fungal skin probelms can look similar, so it always better to see a vet as long as you are not VERY sure what you are dealing with.

Here is more information on mites:

In time, you will learn to judge better what is normal and what needs treating. It is part of the normal learning curve that never stops, as experienced as you may be. We are all still on it!

thanks wiekbe, for the info, links and making me feel better! Its very important i get her sorted especially since I am planning to get another piggy soon, and the advice on the link to get a new piggy vacinated too even if there are no signs seems sensible. x

I found my piggy got mites from meadow hay (£1.70 per bag)

I now use Burgess Excell Timothy Hay (£4.45 per bag) but its worth it cos better quality hay.

There are also shampoos and drops for mites but invectermin injections from your vet is gr8 and will help.

:))

thanks piggylove, i just get my hay from pets at home not sure how good that is. I was told by the vet to just used baby shampoo, as shampoos for mites are sensitive for their skin, but iv def decided to go back for a 3rd injection after posting on here :)

Yes it is vital to complete the course of invermectin injections absolute must :))

Burgess excel hay is actually tested for fungal spores or mites. Fab stuff.

Some PAH hay has ringworm in at the mo. And i wouldnt be suprised if there are mites in there too.

Thanks for your replies. I have read that without a host the mites die within 3 weeks, so one batch of hay i have had for a couple of months would be ok to use?( i dont know about the ringworm and how long that lasts without a host, I'm not entirely sure what it is am reading into it) otherwise i will get some burgess excel hay, do you know if you can get that at pets at home? i think i need to look into alternative pet shops. thats excellent that it is tested!

She is going back on mon for her 3rd injection, event tho the vet said she didnt think she needed it, however she said they can have to to 4 injections, is that right? so 4 is the whole course? on the link it says 2 or more. she is hardly scratching now and the mites dont seem to have really bothered her, shes always fine to be stroked and picked up.
