I feel so sorry for poor crystal but there is little more I can do for her than what I have done.

I found last week that crystal has mites and treated all 4 right away with ivormectin spot on. I had already changed the hutch out (which is how I discovered the little blighters) and the only thing that I can think has caused this is my own fault :( Despite previously deciding that they would not bed on hay I had a rubbish bag of meadow hay which I didnt want to throw away so I put it down on the wetest section of the hutch - right at the bottom of the ramp under the hay rack where they all spend a lot of time. That way I could clean out the hay from this section daily and not worry about wasting a whole bag of hay.

Well it must have been harbouring lice as crystal has them on her, she has removed some hair and this morning created a sore patch on her back from grooming/itching so much - which might have been triggered by me inspecting her hair all over to find out which little blighters I was dealing with and she was very itchy on that part everytime I parted her hair to look (such a bad piggie mummy but I needed to find them as on her sides there were none).

I removed all evidence of hay from the hay racks and on the bedding yesterday and replenished from a new bag (and as it happens a new batch). I have them out in the run today and examined from top to toe all 4 of them and minty (the abby) is the only one with still no evidence of lice, I am sure they are there though, flash is riddled but not bothered and fudge screamed because I was parting her hair backwards and she wasnt happy about it rolleyes she has some but not as many as flash. Crystal ironically has the least but has reacted badly to her invadors and I dont know what else I can do to help here, I feel so bad for her as its my fault :0

I am doing a clean out today, I wont replace with fleece or paper shreadings, for the moment I will just put paper in and throw it daily till I can get this under control. I think for the bedroom I will put a towel in and change that each day too (washing them frequently).

I know the invasion is no where near as bad as the calves I had to treat years ago on a farm, all I did back then was lice powder the lot of them and their hay (shaking it off before feeding, farm animals are not treated as well as pets). I just did as I was told and over the years I have seen a few farm animals with some lice, one injection of ivormec (the same thing as ivormectin) and that was all I had to do. I even had a dog here that stressed so much he chewed his hair off in places he could reach, all these I have dealt with and allowed nature to run its course.

So why do I feel like I am not doing enough for crystal - which I have never seen any of them scratch too much anyday (she must be doing this at night), I will put aloe on her sore patch to try to sooth it for her, wish I could comb out all the nasties and get them off her once and for all. All 4 pigs are coping better than me :red they are not that bothered and chomping on the grass (which is moved to a new patch daily).

I'm currently treating all 7 of mine for lice with ivermectin. I have a wooden hutch and run and have stripped it down and sparayed it with milton then put it back together again, I literally removed the floors so just the frame stood, and then got a scrubbing brush and got into all the corners. You need to make sure you scrub the hutch else you'll end up going around in circles trying to get rid of them! It's a lot of work, but it's worth it for yuor piggies sake x

is it a wooden hutch? and is it mites or lice, or both?

Just plain old boring lice :( and yes it is a wooden hutch.

The other three are not at all bothered by the little blighters, not even bothered by the ivormectin but crystal went mental running round the hutch and shaking her fur once I treated her. I think she has super sensitive skin :0 but I can get some aloe vera soap/shampoo - perfectly safe for small animals and bath her in a few days (once the pesticide has had a chance to work) to get her quite pink skin back down to a normal colour.

She is such a sensitive little lady and sadly although she has the least amount of lice on her, she reacted the worst (still cant find any on minty at all but she must have them). Has anyone else had a piggy with sensitive skin? (crystal is my white rex by the way)

I think its a bit of prevelant issue reading by the posts lately but I didnt know what to treat the hutch with, so thank you I will get some milton tomorrow and srcub the wood with it - thank you for that tip (I am cleaning out daily)

Have you treated the hutch? Boiling water and FS10 disinfectant should do the job

No I confess I had not as I thought my spray small pet discinfectant would help, I will be treating it today as I am cleaning it out completely daily at the moment till I see an improvement in louse numbers. I have also reduced the amount of hay I put in the racks as I completely change this as well - no hay hanging around to harbour any blighters while they chomp through it (I have 3 racks so plenty of hay if I dont pack it full like I have been, dont worry they still have ample to eat all day)

On a slightly plus note, crystals bum area seems less angry and she was up the front of the hutch this morning chatting to me like she used to - she was hiding in a plastic hide or the bedroom area for the past 3 days :( so she seems a little brighter in herself. And her pal minty was sat with her talking to me too x) she is a special girly that minty (well both of them are really).

not that I want to post a picture of my poorly piggie, this was yesterday after grass time and aloe treatment, full hutch clean - I relented and put towels down after finding crystals tum was a little too pink (not red but angry from the itching), fleece in the bedroom as I have enough to change daily, downstairs where the food ism just paper with sprinkling of sawdust to absorb wees (and it is just a sprinkling on half the bottom section)

she looks so sorry for herself :(

and you can see the dent she made in her fur yesterday 8... but she seemed happier once I put aloe on it, certainly worked on her bum as its back to skin colour this morning.

I use cat flea spray on my piggie's when they got lice ( on the advice of a very knowledgable guinea pig fanatic) which worked pretty quickly but i have an indoor cage which is all easily cleanable so that may of helped, hug's to your poor piggie's:( guinea pigs do seem to suffer dont they mine have had lice and mite's and in the last two moth's, mites, ringworm, fungal and now one has earmite's!

just finished scrubbing out the hutch, it smells like a swimming pool now :)) as do I :)) Had to remove all the horrible spiders first from the roof :)>>>

good news for crystal, her tummy looks a much happier pink, its still pinker than it should be, her backside is scabby but back to normal colour and her sore patch is looking really good, a bit more aloe on it to help her heal and to sooth that area.

All 4 have punk hairstyles now thanks to the spot on treatment but from my experience with flea treatment spot ons I know this will wear off over time.

The problem with cat products is they might not have the same active ingredients that would have done the job, not that I am saying that wont work. I have used ivormec for years and know it does the job so I was particular about getting the right kind of spot on, and one that is small animal friendly which judging by crystals reaction not only to the lice, but the atual spot on, I was correct sticking with an approved treatment. I know pepper runs round the garden after her treatment, I was not expecting such a fuss as I got from crystal - the other three - not bothered at all :))

Hopefully your scrubbing has paid off!

If it hasn't, do you have the ability to move them indoors to an indoor cage? You can then have a good old disinfect and good soaking with boiling water then let it dry right out before putting piggies back in. It's also easy to keep on top of cleaning a plastic base daily (and quickly!) to minimalise the lice

If you need an indoor cage let me know, I'm in bristol but routinely in WSM and have a spare.

Thank you that is a very kind offer - would you have a big enough cage for 4 pigs, I know it would only be short term but I dont have an indoor set up yet as I dont know how big I really have to go (and need to re-arrange spare room for the set up).

I examined each pig today and fudge has no signs of lice, crystal I can see old evidence but nothing live and flash after much searching only found 2 lice (which was better than obvious lice when I last looked a few days ago). It looks like the numbers are reducing but no dancing bunny till I cant see any ;)

Excellent! The cage I have wouldn't be big enough to house 4 pigs in, but it'd be ok as a base for them over night if they had access to a run during the day? It'd only be for a few days anyway :)

Hi Pepper! I've just stumbled across this looking for something that I can use on my piggie's dry skin patches! One of my piggies has just been treated for lice (I used the Johnsons insecticidal shampoo and all the nasty lice have died and he's now louse free!) but I've noticed that he has a few dry skin patches on him and he's a bit flakey. What's the aloe stuff that you've used on your piggies, if you don't mind my asking?

I've got a few piggies with dry patches at the moment so any suggestions as to what I could use to help them would be really appreciated! :)

The only place I trust having pure aloe products is these guys - I have used it over the years and know that it works.

https://www.foreverliving.com/retail/shop/shopping.do?task=viewProductDetail&itemCode=038 the soap can be diluted to make a type of shampoo to help skin care

and I always have a tube of this on hand for topical application - this is what I have been putting on crystals sore patch

I have seen some vets stock it, if you find it a bit pricey then holland and barrett are the only other trusted place to get aloe products but make sure the aloe is listed as high up on the ingredients list as possible.

The good thing about aloe - if ingested it wont hurt at all, infact it should aid healing from inside out so I never worry about putting it on animals (its stopping pepper licking it off as she loves the taste of aloe thats the problem).

Aw, poor you & the piggies. :-(

If you want to try a more natural way to get rid of them, check out this website, with some advice on lice & mites.
I haven't used her myself, but I've heard she is great.
All you do is bath them, and apparently the lice just...disappear. :-)

Here is the 'Lice 'n' Easy' Shampoo, that costs £5.25 for a 100ml bottle. A fair bit pricey, I know, but if it'll all be gone in one wash, then it might be worth it.

I've ordered the 200ml bottle, which is £8 something, because I have recently discovered my girls have hay lice (static lice)! If I remember (lol), and try and post back to you how it goes.

Good luck!
