Hi all.

For the past few years my pig has been taking Cystassist for his bladder issues. He has 1 capsule split over 3 days, so I mixed it with 3 ml of water and gave him 1ml each day.

We gave him Cystassist as recommended by the vet, as it was a cheaper alternative to the others.

It's now out of stock so the vet said to get Cystease and mix it the same way as it's virtually the same thing.

But it absorbs the water and turns into a gel like substance. When I mix it with 3 ml of water I can get 1 dose of 1ml out of it and by the next day it"s gelled up and the remainder is about 0.4ml of a syringe total.

How do others mix it, to ensure their pig gets the same dose each day? The capsules are quite hard to open so I can't see how you could possibly take 1/3 of the powder out of one.

The only way I can think is getting 3 pots and putting a 1/3 in each and mixing it with water each day.

I can't understand why it's so different as it's supposed to be the same thing. Plus my pig absolutely hates it whereas he'd take the Cystassist quite happily.

The medium with which the active ingredient is mixed with differs from brand to brand; the one in cystease is obviously much more absorbent. That is the problem with derivatives - they are not exactly the same. ;)

Could you mix the cystease with 3 ml of water, but then give 1 ml immediately, suck out another 1ml into a second pot, so you have got the right amount of the active ingredient in each of the three doses, but you are then free to mix in as much water on the following days as you need for easy syringing?

When my boy was on cystease it was 1/2 a capsule per day I would gently twist both ends of the capsule and it comes apart then put powder in a little dish and put the capsule back together again,
then fill a cup with some water and syringe 1ml up into the syringe and put it in the dish with the powder and mix it up.

Thank you both! I'll give both ways a try. It was quite a surprise finding it hard gone all goopy!

If I keep it separate then I could try topping it up with a bit of his orange juice to max the flavour

I don't know if this is any help at all but Toast is on Cystophan capsules daily and I found it didn't mix well with water, so I pour the powder into a bit of cucumber or pepper and she takes it fine

My crunchie is on cystease.

I twist the capsule and empty the contents into the "tub" part of the pill crusher. Crunchie is on 1 capsule morning and night so i dont need to worry about splitting.

For your little one i would empty the capsule, and add just under 3ml of water (the powder will increase the overall volume). Get 3 1ml syringes and draw up one ml in each, which should be all of it. Give one syringe for each dose, store the other 2 in the fridge until you need them x
