Amysguineapigs
Teenage Guinea Pig
Teddy who’s 4 1/2 has been having mobility problems, it started with a mild limp, started losing weight and not coming out much for food, so I took him to my vets who put him on nutriquin and metacam as we suspected arthritis. He wasn’t improving so I started syringe feeding him and managed to maintain his weight, he then started bunny hopping, so I then took him back to my cavy savvy vet as we thought maybe deficiency in calcium but she said he’s not displaying the usual signs of it. We discussed it and decided to book him in for x ray as she said maybe it could be spondylitis, he had two x rays one of which they had to do unconscious so whilst he was sleepy she took some blood.
These investigations happened on the 11th January, when my parents briefly spoke to my vet when they picked him up as I was at work she said possibly spondylitis but otherwise his x rays look healthy for his age but promised she’d call me to go more in-depth. She is a good vet, known her for many years but she’s so extremely busy, I’ve called and called to get a vet call back but it just hasn’t happened, I’m so frustrated as I don’t know what’s going on.
I have a sick guinea pig, I’ve been syringing for two weeks now, he’s appetite has been great and mid week I thought he was getting better as he started to come out for hay but today he’s gone downhill, not keen for food, looks dehydrated so syringing water too and generally has that dying look in his eyes. I’m calling my vets first thing tomorrow to get an appointment for tomorrow as we can’t go on like this and I need answers.
Also not only does he bunny hop he lays very flat out on his side with his back legs in the air and it takes him a while to get up, I’m worried it could be neurological? What else can I do?
