My guinea pig, Cinnamon, has lost lots of weight recently, I've bought him see vets 5-6 times already, had his top and bottom incisors trimmed twice, but the problem hasn't improved. Two days ago I bought him again to the vet, and this time she told me that Cinnamon actually has a serious molors problem as they're so long and curvy that it starts to touch his tongue, I've syringe feeding cinnamon for nearly 2 months now as he can't eat by himself. I really feel frustrated and angry cause everytime there's a different vet and I asked if there's any molors problem, but they all said it's fine, not til 2 days ago. The vet didn't suggest to hav op as Cinnamon is so thin that he'll not make over it, and suggest me to put him sleep. However apart from this problem, Cinnamon is still active and following the other pig walk round the house... I know he won't live long but as he's still fit and active, I dare not to put him sleep. The idea is always in my mind, which way is better fir me cause the vet said he's suffering from starvation...

hi there if he has been on syring paste for 2 mounths l am not suprized he has a molar problem !
the action of chewing dried food and hay is what wears the molars into a propper profile
what the hek is this vet playing at ? Out of interst what are you syringe feeding him, and how much per day ?

did he cut the insisors because he thought they were responibale for him not eating ?
if you post the town where you live , then l am sure one of the other members will know
of a responsibal vet

lt is very lightly once his molares are sorted he will start to put on weight . but just to be
on the safe side and cover all bases , ask vet to get a poo analasiss done

for a poo analersiss , colect a few poos each day for 3 days and present them to your vet and tell
him you want a full spectrum poo culture done . he may say a poo float will be suficant , but this
dos not take microscopic bugs into account

I found out he's losing weight and can't eat by himself 2 months ago, even though he want to eat but food started drop off from his mouth, that's why I started syringe feeding him. The first vet thought it's his incisors causing problem and just trim them...I found all these vets seem didnt bother about guinea pig, always telling me as they're delicate and won't
survive. I live in Birmingham UK, hope someone can give me a reliable vet to help

hi again if l am not mistaken there is a recomended vet list and a syinge feeding guide
somwhere on the foram ,

Thx, I'll try to check over but I'm a new member...

hi there is a vet finder in the green bar at the top of the page ,
just enter your post code

The very best vet you can get your guinea pig seen by is Simon Maddock of The Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton. I know it isn't close to you, but Simon can do dental work without the need for GA, in most cases. People travel from all over the UK to see Simon with their guinea pigs and the results he gets with dental issues is amazing.

Thanks for your help, gizzy and furryfriends! I've read the chat and knew Simon is the best. However I cant drive and still thinking how to get over there

Hi,

Sorry to hear Cinnamon is poorly.

By the sounds of it I would definitely now look to seek help from Simon and Kim. One of our members @Tim has recently had his piggy Dougal dealt with by Simon with amazing results so I have tagged him in for you if perhaps you wanted further advice before deciding for sure to take him.

Are you perhaps able to get a bus or train to Northampton if you do not drive?

I am not sure if anyone else is able to help you get Cinnamon there but I will tag @Stewybus who may be able to help or give further advice. Plus other members will be along during the day who may be able to help.

Keep doing what you can at present syringe feeding and offering hay and nuggets and veges and water as you need to keep going while you seek help.

Sending you both *hugs*

There is a Facebook page piggy trains anyone have the link? Maybe they could help.

Where abouts are you?

Your piggy definitely has a good chance of recovering, with the correct care.

Yay - that's fantastic. An 1 hour and 10 minutes isn't a great deal of time if they can help your little pig!

Do keep us updated and good luck!

Cinnamon is the one at the back, Chao is the black colour one

He definately needs his molars done.
I recently had to have a rescue piggy pts due to her bad teeth which rescue lacked in providing proper care, so its vital they are seen as soon as possible. When i got my littlun (even tho she shouldnt have been allowed home with me ) she was so underweight, and vet wouldnt operate unless she gained a bit, so i was given emipred which is a gut stimulant and advised about metatone tonic by a freind and gave her appetite a bit, and she put on enough, but sadly she relapsed as she just wouldnt eat hay, which makes up 85% of their diet and really helps in keeping teeth trim.
I'm sorry your dealing with this its not pleasant :(

Just booked to see simon next Monday, fingercross! Cinnamon appetite is still good, as he had the dental problem for 2 months now, he has completely not eaten or chewed any hays, may be that's why his molors are getting worse recently. Really hope Simon could help...

Good news, though a way off, but if theyre happy a week is fine, then am sure they know best :)
Yes ide say so as pellets or veggies alone wont wear them down and takes the constant chewing of grass/hay

Hope it won't b too late, regret I haven't joined the forum earlier instead of wasting time on those vets, so cinnamon could received right treatment earlier

Like i said I'm sure if vets know the situation and they are happy for you to wait till monday then great.
maybe try chopping up peppers, cucumber really small and see if she will eat them. My one loved a strawberry and would slurp at it.
I know some baby food you can feed them, which ones i dont know, but might be ideal to try and keep some weight on her.

Hi,

That is good news however it is a week away. Was that the earliest you could take him or is that the earliest that Simon can see him? Did you explain that this has been ongoing for 2 months now?

I guess the main thing for now is trying to get him to eat and drink. Have you tried different types of hay or readigrass to try to entice him to eat? Sometimes if it is something new they eat it just cause it literally is something they have not had before. Even if it is a small bit of hay that may help.

Will he eat his nuggets? If not you could try adding water to make a paste to feed him.

I have also fed mine baby food as well when they were ill at my vets suggestion. I used Ella's kitchen which is 100% organic and can be bought at ASDA. You can get all types of varieties from banana and apple to sweet potatoes, broccoli and carrots so hopefully you may find one he will like/tolerate.

Good luck and we will be thinking of you both xx

Oh, thx! I'll get some baby food for him x .cinnamon can't chew anything so I now blend his pellets n muesli with water, syringing him. I used to buy those concentrated powder from vet but it's too expensive as it's around £5 per pack. Think he would like those baby food...

If anyone can help it's Simon and Kim, my pig is being treated by them at the moment too.

Ok if you are trying to feed him though cut everything up into tiny pellet sized pieces. I have a rabbit who has no front teeth only his back teeth. He cannot eat any veges etc unless they are cut up the size of his pellets. Perhaps you could try that to? xx

Hi Anififi, I have sent you a PM

A quick update...
We live less than 10 minute drive from each other, Cinnamon will be coming to stay with us for the Thursday night and I'll taking him with Dougal to see Simon on Friday :)
