Less than a week ago my Momo, 4,5 years old guinea pig, stopped eating the normal amount. He was still eating hay and pellets and drinking water but gradually he stopped those too. I took him to a guinea pig vet and she couldn't find anything wrong with him. So I came back home with antibiotics and pain meds. I found out he does eat lettuce. So I've been giving it to him since it's the only thing he eats. I've been also force feeding him mushed up pellets since he stopped eating.

What could be wrong with him? Vet saw no problem in his teeth, no breathing or heart issues. He isn't even interested in food. He used to go crazy over cucumber but now he turns his head if I try to give it to him. Can I give him lots of lettuce? I bought three different lettuces for him and he likes them all.

Could it be that it's just Momo's time? He isn't very young anymore...

I can't answer your question, but just posting to bump up your post in the hope that someone can help.

How guinea pig savvy is your vet? Is it worth getting a second opinion? A piggy who won’t eat is really unwell - either it’s mechanical (problem with teeth or mouth) or it’s other illness. Some antibiotics can wipe out a piggy's appetite, but if he wasn’t eating before the antibiotics then they may not be the cause. You are doing the right thing giving mushed pellets to keep him going. I think I would speak to your vet again.

Afaik she's not the best guinea pig vet the clinic has but she should be decent. I'll try to get a time for the better vet if she's not on a holiday. Momo's eating some hay now so that's a plus. The vet before said they might have to anesthetize him for better results but he's weak so there's no telling if he'll survive it. Thanks! I also noticed that Momo is drooling. Isn't that signing that there might be a teeth problem?

I believe drooling is a sign of teeth problems. Hope you find out what’s wrong with Mono soon, such a worry time for you x

The vet had him anesthetized and filed down a tooth that was a little sharp. The tooth was kinda broken apparently. And he had some kinda wound in his mouth but it shouldn't be so painful to stop him from eating. I'm visiting a specialist tomorrow. He eats a little lettuce and took a few bites of cucumber today. His breath is strange, kinda raspy despite the antibiotics. He seems to have a flu too now. I'm getting kinda desperate here =(. I don't want Momo to suffer any longer... but I wish I could keep him with me but I don't want to be selfish if he's suffering. He's been a good boy and takes his syringe food pretty well!

Keep up with hand and syringe feeding. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in. Hope the specialist can he is seeing tomorrow can help him make a full recovery, good luck x

The specialist x-rayed him. She found that he's likely suffering from pneumonia. I got a different antibiotic (hope this one work) and he got fluids. After getting the fluids he started eating some hay found in the carrier! And took a little bit of cucumber! I really, really hope this antibiotic works because apparently it's our only chance. Baytril if I remember correctly. I'm still gonna syringe feed him. We got some syringes home so we can give him fluids here too. I hope he doesn't infect out other piggie.

My old guinea pig had pneuominia, he survived, cant remember the antbiotic name but they were injected in with a needle at the vets everyday for a week. Poor little guy had to have breathing support and stayed in for 2 nights at the vets. He was 4 at the time. Once they get it they have more chance of getting it again, but he didnt and lived to 6

Good to hear he survived! Hearing success stories makes me a little more hopeful!

That what i thought, it will boost you. He also survived 2 uri's and severe bloat. Makes me sound like an awful owner but he was just one of those pigs

Momo's breath is not rattling anymore but he's got no energy still. And he's not eating if I don't hold him or force feed him. Not drinking either. I'm not sure if Baytril is working or not. I'm pretty sad =(.

You try him on tiny pieces of cucumber- that will add liquid to his diet along with the syringe feeding

He's still sick.... I was going to have him euthanized today because he can't even walk properly but... is it possible he suddenly developed scurvy? He get vit C every day the recommended dose but is it still possible? And does scurvy develop so fast, in 1 day?

If you are giving Vit C every day then it is most unlikely that scurvy has caused him to lose the ability to walk. I'm so sorry that he is still so poorly. What does the vet say?

Oh so sorry he is still poorly, does his vet have any thoughts as to his walking problems? I hope the little fella pulls through. X
