Hi,

Today I noticed my 3 year old girl did not eat her lunch and she was sitting with her hind legs sprawled out not moving much. I took her to the vet straight away! My vet examined her and said her lungs are clear, her teeth are fine, she has gained weight since her last visit, but her glands are slightly swollen. She was given an antinflamitory injection and a weeks course of antibiotics. She was given her first antibiotic dose as soon as we got home. She has passed a few normal poops and some diarreaha (not too watery but not as solid as they would normally be). When I got home this evening I went to check on her and she has started drooling and making some funny noises as if she was trying to be sick, even though she seems more bright eyed and is walking fine. She is coming to sleep with me in the bedroom tonight but I'm just so concerned and confused at what this could be?! Does anyone have any ideas? I am worrying night shift tomorrow so will be able to take her back into the vet if she has not improved. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Jody and Moniqua x

What food have you fed her? Any chance she could have eaten something she shouldnt have? Is she pregnant or any chance of being pregnant? Is she eating ok? does she have a bloated and tense abdomen? What glands does the vet mean being swollen? her neck or all of them?

She has been eating her usual. Nuggets and hey always on supply, Lunch time fresh veg (carrots, cucumber, apples, lettuce etc). I do have male guinea pigs but they are kept separate so there is no chance of her being pregnant. She has stopped eating and I am considering trying her on some recovery food, however, she is drooling allot and I'm not sure she will take it. Her abdomen is fine. The vet said it was her neck glands are swollen. I just gave her a quick check up and she is still drooling. It seems as if she is tring to be sick but all that is coming up is drool :( I'm so worried. Will be phoning the vet first thing tomorrow morning!

Try phoning the vets now, even for some advice. Guineas can get twisted stomachs occationally, and the drooling/retching worries me a bit, keep a close eye on her tummy, especially if it swells in any way. If she is not eating you will need to get some food into her, you can soak down some pellets or use critical care if you have some? But i would definatly call the vet for some more advice this evening if you can?

I have just called the vet and luckily enough it was the vet I saw today. She told me to syringe feed her some water and if she takes that try her on some recovery food. I have also made another appointment for tomorrow morning.

So far I have managed to get a good amount of water into Moniqua. She got a bit bothered by it so I am going to give her a 30 min rest then give her some of the recovery sash. I have put her in a nice cosy room in a nice clean cage. I have noticed some more solid droppings which makes me happy. I'm still worried about her and will try and do some research to find out what could possibly be wrong with her. Thank you for your help and any more advice you have would be great. J & M x

O.K I just called Apex vets and they have recommended that I ask my vet to do an X-Ray and blood test, so I will be asking for this tomorrow morning. The vet also said if we feel like we are stuck at a dead end I can take Moniqua through to see them. They are about 1 and a half hours drive from where I live but if worst comes to worst I think it will be the right move. Thank you all for the help! x

Could she have something stuck in her throat or mouth? Was she prior to all this chewing on sticks or wood bark etc? My piggy had a wooden stick type ball and got a piece stuck in his mouth years ago, I had to remove it as he was going bonkers, I won't buy them now.

oh bless, I hope she is comfortable, and you both get a bit of shut eye. Fingers crossed. x

The vet had a look with the teeth telescope type thing (not sure what it is called) and everything was normal. I'm going to try and give her some food now, hopefully she takes it x

Just to let you all know I took Moniqua back to the vet this morning. My vet recommended putter under anaesthetic and having a closer look at her teeth.

I just heard back from them now. Basically Moniqua has a few small ulcers on the back of her thought and the vet is not sure how far they go down. Se has been given a few injections to help keep her gut going and to help combat the ulcers. My vet will be keeping her in over night as she feels this is for the best.

I will be calling later this afternoon for a progress update. Fingers crossed my little girl can beat this. Thank you all for the help. x
