oh god this seems never ending but monkey seem to pick up but today he seems off his food again so i weighed him he was 1.167kg which I'm sure is less than this time last week I'm syringing him water with his metacam and will syrinnge him baby food again. i rang the vets but she is in on a wednesday so I'm at a loss can piggies go down hill after an op like six/ seven days after?

Aw bless him.

I'm sure Ive read some threads on here where piggies have struggled after ops for a while, I suppose it really depends on the GP.

Has he eaten anything at all today?

Yes they can; it happened to more than one of mine. Sudden loss of appetite after an op is an alarm signal - he could have an infection or abscess in his body. Have you still got antibiotics at home? It would be good if he could be seen asap.

Please feed him mushed up hay based pellets if you can (rather than baby food) as well as water and weigh him daily until he safel out of the woods - he will need up 120ml to keep his weight; it is best fed little but often, even throughout the night; and at that stage it is usually a fight to get it in. Have you got probitoics to add to your feed? You can also dissolve 1/8 of a normal vitamin C tablet in 1-2 ml of water and syringe that; you can't overdose on vitamin C.

The best antibiotic for bacterial infections is zithromax (arithromycin). It helps pull a piggy through where baytril fails. That - and determined round the clock feeding - have certainly saved my Hywel's life. I am sorry to say, but right now, you have to fight for his life.

Here are the contact details of Simon Maddock in Northampton, who has researched zithromax: http://www.catandrabbit.co.uk/contact_us.htm

I wish you all the best!

hello thank you for reply ive mashed up some guinea pig pellets and syringe him 4ml just a momement ago with regards to meds i only had 3 baytril syringes after op vet said that should be enough. i do still have how ever tribissen 0.3ml is that any good? ive given him 3 drops of metacam also.

I just want to wish Monkey well. I really hope he starts eating soon.

Tribissen should be OK. It contains the same active ingredient as septrin. But as I have never given it and don't know what strength you got, I can't tell you the right dose.

However, when you see your vet, please talk about zithromax - it is especially good with bad abscesses or URIs. It is a much stronger antibiotic than septrin or baytril.

The next few days will be critical. Don't underestimate the difference your determined care makes!

i spoke to anna at wheek and squeak her advise was keep up the syringe feeding to ive also just given some readigrass i know its not the best after a bladder stone but he likes it and is eating it plus ive been told by friendship estate it has more nutrients than hay and he needs them.

hello went off to the vet this morning after he had eaten his breakfast typical. the vet took a look at him checked his wound and said because he had bright eyes and was alert he was doing ok, she said maybe he just needed an extra bit of nursing like syringe feeding etc i have to up his dose of metacam to ten drops daily, but his wound is healing nicely. also she said to try and feed him fresh grass danilions and blackberry bush leave etc.
