Hi All,
This is my Dog Monty that I got on the 24th April 1995, he was a rescue and was going to be PTS at 5pm that day as nobody wanted him. I looked at my watch it was 4:58 it was then a done deal, I had to have him. His notes said not to be mixed with children which was fine, I was 17, no children and an only child. Everyone was so happy for Monty, his name in the kennels was Monty too and I had chosen the name before I went to the RSPCA so it seemed fitting to have him.
I was dating a guy six years older than myself and mum and dad were getting some work done on the garden so Monty went to live with Paul's parents for a while. They live on a busy road and you know when you can just see something happening? Well it did. Monty got out and was hit by a car. He broke his back leg, I was frantic, blamed myself of course.
Monty was a destructive dog, he'd been through a lot, was abandoned as a pub on the M57 in Liverpool and abused by children which is why he was weary around them. When he went back to my parents he became so destructive, ripping phones off walls etc etc he just couldn't stay. Thankfully Paul had his own house so took him in. It was either that or back to the RSPCA which I didn't want to do. I knew he was going to be hard work because of all what he had been through but I was prepared for it sadly my parents aren't animal lovers so didn't share my enthusiasm.
Monty lived very happily, I trained him, got him to calm down and walk nicely, he was a joy and became a very much loved dog. One day after I had finished college I went to Pauls and he said Monty had eaten something and was ill. Turns out he had got in and ate mouse poison that was in a cupboard! So we whizzed him up to the vets who checked him over, Monty then started coughing up blood. So he stayed in the vets to see how he went.
He was given a blood thickening agent and picked up, although one lung was no longer working. I blamed Paul for not putting the poison elsewhere but really we didn't think Monty would get in, I still can't figure it out how he did it!
I split with Paul in 1998 and we had shared ownership of Monty but he got confused and didn't know what was happening, so because I cared about him so much and had no way of looking after him myself I had to stop seeing him. I stopped all contact with Paul although spoke to him in 1999 and he told me Monty had passed on, I've no idea if this is true or if he was being hurtful (we had a bad break-up) but Monty will always have a special place in my heart.
So I've put him in Rainbow Bridge but I'm not sure he is no longer with us. Looking back, now I'm older maybe Monty needed an owner with experienced people who could handle a hound with behavioural problems and I think the RSPCA where wrong in allowing me to adopt him but RSPCA and myself just saw the time scale, he had 2 minutes to live before getting PTS and I think all our emotions ruled our heads, he was a cute little guy!
Hope you like him!
Louise
