Mooli Is Poorly

I found blood on the vet bed this afternoon and found Mooli appeared to be bleeding from his bottom. I rushed him to the vets. The nice vet was not there and we saw a horrible one. She checked his anus and said it was clean so it is likely to be blood in his wee. She said it is cystitis probably caused because he does not get vegetables. I told her he gets vegetables twice a day. She said then it is fine. She gave him an injection of baytril but did not hold him so he ran. My partner quickly held him and she did it proper ally. She said give it a week but it could be crystals and if so guinea pigs rarely make such an operation to remove it. She actually said put cranberry juice in his water bottle! He is on .2 baytril twice a day. I have fibreplex already. He has not squealed or acted any different. I am so worried as it could be anything. It must be serious to have blood in his wee and she did not even test his urine.

maybe speak to the other vet then and see about getting metacam aswell. and maybe arranging the urine sample. that way you can find out if it is in his urine. you could be right and it could be from elsewhere. you just didn't sound confident with the vet, that's all. :)
 
The problem is its a drop in service and you never know who will be there. Thank you for replying.
 
That sounds like a bad experience at the vets, most upsetting when you are worried anyway. Poor Mooli, I do hope he'll be alright.
 
I'm so lucky to work where I do - they've all been amazing while Piglet was poorly.

I hope Moolie is soon better - they are such a worry. xx

I hope that the course of baytril will work with Mooli.

This is UTI season, but I would certainly go back and, if at all possible, book with the more knowledgeable vet if symptoms don't disappear within 3 days to a week to get a blood test and if necessary an x-ray done. It may be that he just needs a longer course on septrin. Fingers crossed.
 
Give it 48 hours see how the Baytril does. Do you have any old metacam in? If he is squeaking when weeing get him back down and ask for some Metacam. Metacam is useful in bladder issues because of its anti inflammatory action

You could do with finding out where the blood is coming from - I would do the pig in a bowl trick, syringe him some water carefully if he is a piggie that will drink from the syringe then pop him in a bowl and wait for nature to take it's course. That way you'll definitely know its when he wee's. Visible blood is quite common with UTI or Cystitis, Treacy always had it. So try not to worry too much at first, its good news he is his normal self.

I do not have any metcam in but I have loxicom. The fleece he used in the carrier has pink wee so he is bleeding when he wees. He is not making any noise when he wees. It is so strange. As soon as we got back he ate and rumblestrutted. If he did not have blood in his wee I would never have known anything is wrong.
 
PM me your address and I will make sure they go in the post tomorrow. Will then post a photo of the label so you can read it or you can post the photo on here and I will interpret. They are just a guide but will give you an indication.
 
Loxicom is metacam - you can always buy a pot of ph test sticks from amazon - I and some others on here use them - get piggy to wee in a wasihng up bowl (a big piece of cucumber usually hastens things along) and dip stick in - it will tell you immediately if there is blood in urine - they cost about a tenner for a big pot of 100 sticks.
 
Poor pig. I am thinking of you both. I know Mooli is in good hands with such a loving owner.

Sorry can't really offer any other advice than what the others have put, maybe just make sure he doesn't dehydrate. Watery foods such as cucumber will help flush his system through with liquid too.

pH sticks are not what you need. That will only tell you the pH of the urine, which should be about 8 to 8.5 (i.e. alkaline). The test sticks you need are Multistix GP, which will also indicate protein and blood, amongst other things. I think it's a good sign that he is well in himself, but 0.2 ml Baytril doesn't sound much, depending on the weight and the percentage of the medicine. While Baytril is a good broad spectrum antibiotic, For UTIs Septrin will probably be more effective. I would definitely try to see the good vet. Hope he gets better soon.
 
An alternative to metacom that isn't a prescription medicine would be children's Neurofen (or another children's ibuprofen), which is also an NSAID. The dose the CCT recommend is 0.2ml, twice daily. If you are using old medicine, you should check that it is still in date.
