I have taken Connie back to the vets today. She still has dis coloured urine :( He has felt her and still can not feel anything but says that she has lost a little weight. Could this be down to the baytril? She doesn't have stones or bladder sludge as she had an x ray last week. He has told me to keep her on the baytril over the weekend but he is going to try her on Septrin. He is going to try and get me some for Monday. If this doesn't work I really don't no what I'm going to do as he will have to refer her to a specialist which will be very expensive. Could it be that she just has a bad infection that is taking ages to go? I am just so stressed out by it all and don't no what to do for the best. My vet has been very good to me as he hasn't charged me for todays visit but even he is at a loss :(

I havent read a previous post on this one so the question has probably already been asked your not feeding her any strong coloured veg that could be affecting it are you? Is she eating and drinking ok?

Hi. I'm not an expert at all, but is she an older piggie? My older boy Eric has lost some weight which the vet thinks maybe just his age as he can't find anything wrong and I've been helping him by feeding him critical care to bulk up his diet. Antiobiotics can upset their tummies and may cause some weight loss. Did the vet give you or do you have pro biotic to give 2 hours after baytril dosage to help keep her tum settled?

The weight loss could be due to being on the baytril. If she still isn't right, I would definitely give the septrin a go as its a really good antibiotic for UTI's. Hopefully that will sort her out.

How does she seem in herself? Is she lively and eating well?

Oh and when you say weightloss, are we just looking at a few grams or something a bit more significant?

She has just had a big bowl of melon and cucumber. To look at her you wouldn't think that there is anything wrong with her as she still squeaks like mad for food and runs and plays happily. The weight loss isn't a big weight loss. You can hardly notice.

She is only just over a year :(

I think once she is on the septrin, you will notice a difference. As long as she eats/dinks/poops and generally seems happy, I wouldn't worry too much x

Has she been unwell for long? Hopefully it is something minor that you will help to fix with antiobiotics etc. She still has a great appetite which is a good thing too. Try not to worry (I can't believe I'm saying that, I'm one of the worst!) We love our babies and do our best for them. You're doing everything right :-)

Thank you. This will be her forth week being like this (On baytril for 3). She has had an x ray which showed noting so I suppose thats a good sign. I'm hoping that when shes on the Septrinl, she'll make an improvement. Should she start putting weight back on when shes on the Septrin?

UTIs can last for a long time. Septrin is a much better AB for these problems, I'm glad your vet is prescribing Connie some. Rimadyl is also a wise idea, sine the infection has been present for a while, and the walls of her bladder may be a little inflamed.

Regaining weight can be tricky for some piggies. Septrin is generally better tolerated than Baytril so it's unlikely she'd lose more weight as a direct result of medication.

Thank you for that. I will mention the Rimadyl to him :) Is there any way that I can help her to regain weight? She has always been a small piggy.

Some piggies don't grow that big. My boys (except Eric just now) are around 1300k! Little fatties :-)

If it is a problem you could try the critical care. I'm giving this to Eric just now and luckily he likes it. I've also ordered something called Nutripowder from Galens as someone recommended that to me for helping with weight gain.

Belinda from Galens is great! if you email her she will advise the best product for Connie x

poor connie

Hi Claire, I think maybe the septrin will be the next option, aparently it coats the lining of the bladder giving it a chance to heal, the vet said that she would give me some for Pinkie and Rosie if the baytril had no success. Did you read at all the 'What is normal' on the guinea pig lynx site about unusual coloured wee that young guinea pigs can suffer with? Hope there is some inprovement soon for her. Don't worry too much about her weight Pinkie's has flucuated alot recently, but she is putting it back on now. Obviously if it keeps going down then you will have to look at that. Take care, Sharon.

Sorry to hear Connie is still unwell Claire. Like everyone else has said I think you will find a big difference once you can start giving her the Septrin, Smudge loves it, ours smells a bit like banana! Smudge took a good 5 - 7 days before she showed any real sign of improvement from her infection this time and she is still on the abs, but she has finally stopped weeing blood!

Keeping everything crossed for Connie.
