Not sure if anyone can help, our crested boar had dental work done last year for over grown back teeth(he has a malformation so his teeth grow over his tongue. He had to have the same work carried out last month. Had him there today and his front bottom teeth and 1 back tooth has grown. Now he didn't feed well after op was syringe feed for approx 2.5 weeks after op last month so I'm hoping it is due to not eating they have grown back quickly. However vet thinks he may have arthritis in his jaw. Can't do this op with him every month as its a GA for his well being and at £80 a pop. Could they be trimmed without GA if this to be a regular requirement? and does anyone know of a local vet who would do this we stay in just outside Edinburgh. TIA

The only vet I know of who is experienced with dentals in guinea pigs and does follow-up dentals without GA to prevent teeth from overgrowing again is Simon Maddock in Northampton. It usually takes several rounds of burring at close intervals to catch the teeth before they can grow badly again to bring the whole dental system back into balance. But he has had amazing success with getting guinea pigs from all over the country back to a normal life that have been given up by other vets.

I am tagging in @furryfriends (TEAS) and @MintyAndGarry (TEAS) for you.

I'm sure this vet from the recommended vet locator on the forum does conscious dental work:

I use the recommended vet in Glasgow as well as another vet at that same practice that's excellent but @Beans&Toast uses the vet above and I'm sure they do conscious dentals, the only reason they didn't with her piggy as she was prone to stress related illnesses.

Hopefully she'll be along at some point to better advice :-)

Hope you get a plan together for your little one soon x

Thank you!my ownvet is pretty Cavy savy but wont do conscious dental so worth check out! xx

I can say nothing more than @Wiebke has said above. The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary only exists, as we have Simon just down the road, to correct the teeth. We do the supportive care in between appointments. They can be every few days to begin with, stretching out to weekly, fortnightly, monthly and beyond. We have known of people travelling regularly from Scotland to bring their piggies to Simon.

It really is distressing to us that there seems to be no other option for piggies out there. More often than not, people have exhausted every other option available to them, before they come to Cat and Rabbit, which can often mean the piggy is beyond help, or at very least the possibility of a long term recovery has gone.

Yeah Apex is the vets I use. Glenn and Samuel in particular are amazing and very cavy savy, they've done 4 dental ops on Toast. I had a discussion about concious dental work and he has done them but due to Toast being so unbelievably stressed and nervous he wouldn't even consider it.

Couldn't hurt to ask, I really highly recommend Glenn!

He certainly is trying to eat this morning so good, if he can eat quicker this time I'm in hope his teeth can narturally wear down only lost his original buddy 2 months ago I'm not ready to loose him too.

That's a good sign he's trying to eat. I sympathise with how stressful it can be, Toast goes off her food a lot due to dental and bloat issues, she's started chewing funny again and I'm desperately hoping she won't need her teeth done for a 5th time.

Did you find out about conscious dental work?
