Anyone who read my previous posts about DT with her polycystic ovaries will be sad to hear my other guinea Leeland has lost 200gms in a week, chews awkwardly, yaks, and has pink pee which looks quite calciumy..

I took her to the vets on Wednesday 26th and the vet said to try cranberry and see if the pink goes.. The cranberry was poorly recieved and the pink went no-where, instead she was peeing more and dotting red bits everywhere. So we took her back Friday and the vet gave us antibios/ probios and told me to continue trying to give critical care, she also noticed a lower molar on the right side is slightly longer which I gathered already because she throws her head to the left when she tries to chew. Well today (the 30th) she has put on no extra weight and I can say we are all very exhausted and very depressed about how poorly she is taking to the syringe feeding.

My other guinea DT had to have pain killers and crit care after the op and she took about 3 or 4 goes before accepting medication without even being held. Even now she will rip the syringe from my hand and run off with it! But with Leeland she has to be held without a towel (she burrows into it) by my partner whilst I hold her head in one hand and aim the syringe with the other. I nearly cry every time because she squeels so hard and ends up with big globs all over her cheeks and around her mouth. Feedings take nearly 40 minutes to get 10 mls down because she shakes her head so much and pushes her head so far up/back she chokes. the firmer and quicker you try to act the harder and faster she fights. The softer and kinder you are the loooooonger it takes and you get even less down.

I feel so so cruel. 8...8...8...8...8...

The vet said to keep up the antibios for a week and if there is no improvement I'm to bring her back in for a GA tooth filing. But I just don't understand why the pee is also pink/more calciumy.

It's harrowing how her personality has changed. She is so untrusting now and weak. She used to fly out for strokes and food but she really doesnt respond to anything except the sound of crunchies and even then she looks at everything and tottles back off. Tomatoes and basil are the only 2 things she will accept and I don't really think I should give her too much of those two every single day.

Does anyone have any tips for very difficult syringe piggys? Or excercises to help her trust us again?

She is 3 and a half and this is her first dental issue, but her second UTI (assuming it is just that and not the kidney). I'm hoping it's one problem and not two.

Until a few days ago I was having to syringe my guinea-pig his antibiotics. I found that it was much easier if you crouch down beside a sofa or bench, lay a towel on to keep the surface clean, and press the guinea-pig's rump agaisnt your chest. With one arm stop the guinea-pig from dodging sideways while with the other just pop it into their mouths.

Whizz panicked a lot less when he was down on all fours so perhaps try it with all-fours on the ground and however is easiest for you.

thanks for the advice, I'velooked on guinealynx and they suggest something very similar!
The problem is that she backs up, pushes the syringe and your hand away, and uses any leverage to push her head up/back/ to the sides. If I get her back to my chest, rest her bum on the table, grip her tummy/chest (with her arms splayed) in one hand with her cheeks between my thumb and fingers... it *might* work.. She's darn strong for how little she's eaten but usually wears out after 20 minutes. But so do we! haha.

I can't manage a 6x a day feeding when I have work, like today. I can come home at midday, then I can do one at 6 and then one before my bed at 9 tonight. It's a 30 minutes commute so to get home and come back out it'll be an hour drive... that's without the feed :s I can get away with it today because it's a Sunday.. but tomorrow might be a different story :/ I don't think my boss will understand why I have to be gone nearly 2 hours. Even if I stayed an hour over.

BLAH!

Haha.. I'd LOVE to... but I work at a food flavour factory. In the benefits of health and safety - and to stop my guinea sniffing powder fumes!- I'd have to keep her in the car in the car park.. she'd be so bored! haha. Wonder if I could keep her in the changing rooms. I'm the only girl on site that works in the factory itself and the room is airconditioned nice and warm and no powders! :/ Might have to go see..... 'the big boss'..

£10 he says no. {:|

If I was boss I'd have bring your pets to work day, EVERY day! Pets, especially piggies, are so relaxing.

If you want any help or advice re syringe feeding and dealing with a piggie with dental issues, please call me. My contact numbers are on the Sanctuary website.

www.teasnorthampton.co.uk

I have been dealing with dental piggies for over 5 years and have found ways to deal with the difficult feeders, plus ideas for how to ensure they don't go hungry when you are away from the house.

I also have a list of people who are willing to help with syringe feeding, so could maybe suggest someone who might be able to help during the day.

I LOVE YOU! xoxo

sorry, that's a bit strong.

I will definitely check out your link. I am lucky today, I have a legend of a shift manager in who says if I get my quota done I can leg it home for the rest of the day so I'm BUSTING CHOPS! He'll look after the place for the rest of the shift. I tried to explain my guineapig conundrums and he just smiled and laughed and said he understood -c

Wont have the same luck tomorrow. Tuesday and Wednesday I do overnight shifts 6pm til 6am.. I doubt that's very sociable hours to call on helpers. I'd get my parter to help but he can barely get them out the cage in under 10 minutes... syringe feeding Leeland will be like crafting a 5ft Buddah out of cornflakes!

Poor Leeland :(

Definitely sounds like you have 2 issues here. First of all the dental, it sounds like she'll definitely need some work done.

The other is a possible UTI, did the vet give you any metacam (painkiller)? This would greatly help Leeland to feel happier and would help with any dental pain and also the pain of a possible Urine infection. Once the antibiotics kick in any visible blood in the urine should start to disappear... Which Antibiotics has she been given and what dosage? I would recommend getting an xray sorted if she does not improve after 5 days of antibiotics to rule out Bladder Stones.

Really sorry you are going through this, syringe feeding can be very hard for both piggie and yourself. Hope you get some answers and Leeland feels better soon x

Leeland is on baytril.. There is a tiny bit of metacam left from DT's treatment but I dont want to give it until the vet Ok's it and gives me a proper supply! Today I was lucky enough to do a half day at work, so I rushed home, spent an hour giving 6mls of crit care, 2 mls of water/cranberry juice mix and 1ml of a home made chunky veg smoothy to giver her tummy something it was a bit more used to. I figured the change in diet would make her feel a bit upset too. Then I went to p@h to get some forage mix.. at least if she cant eat she should still be surrounded by interesting stuffs :) Then I went to the park in the rain and got some fresh long grass (which I individually hand wash incase of ..things) and some dandelion leaves. She's managed to eat a dandelion leaf and a strand of grass by her self so that's cool. More crit care in ten minutes and then again at 9pm along with her pain killers.

Tomorrow I'm ringing for a vet appt. which I'll have to leave work for but I have fingers crossed my lab manager will ok that..
