Teenage Guinea Pig
Anyone who read my previous posts about DT with her polycystic ovaries will be sad to hear my other guinea Leeland has lost 200gms in a week, chews awkwardly, yaks, and has pink pee which looks quite calciumy..
I took her to the vets on Wednesday 26th and the vet said to try cranberry and see if the pink goes.. The cranberry was poorly recieved and the pink went no-where, instead she was peeing more and dotting red bits everywhere. So we took her back Friday and the vet gave us antibios/ probios and told me to continue trying to give critical care, she also noticed a lower molar on the right side is slightly longer which I gathered already because she throws her head to the left when she tries to chew. Well today (the 30th) she has put on no extra weight and I can say we are all very exhausted and very depressed about how poorly she is taking to the syringe feeding.
My other guinea DT had to have pain killers and crit care after the op and she took about 3 or 4 goes before accepting medication without even being held. Even now she will rip the syringe from my hand and run off with it! But with Leeland she has to be held without a towel (she burrows into it) by my partner whilst I hold her head in one hand and aim the syringe with the other. I nearly cry every time because she squeels so hard and ends up with big globs all over her cheeks and around her mouth. Feedings take nearly 40 minutes to get 10 mls down because she shakes her head so much and pushes her head so far up/back she chokes. the firmer and quicker you try to act the harder and faster she fights. The softer and kinder you are the loooooonger it takes and you get even less down.
I feel so so cruel. 8...8...8...8...8...
The vet said to keep up the antibios for a week and if there is no improvement I'm to bring her back in for a GA tooth filing. But I just don't understand why the pee is also pink/more calciumy.
It's harrowing how her personality has changed. She is so untrusting now and weak. She used to fly out for strokes and food but she really doesnt respond to anything except the sound of crunchies and even then she looks at everything and tottles back off. Tomatoes and basil are the only 2 things she will accept and I don't really think I should give her too much of those two every single day.
Does anyone have any tips for very difficult syringe piggys? Or excercises to help her trust us again?
She is 3 and a half and this is her first dental issue, but her second UTI (assuming it is just that and not the kidney). I'm hoping it's one problem and not two.
