I had to make a last minute run to Petsmart after work today because the pigs were out of food. When I was walking toward the food isle, I glanced at the pig cage (tank, really) and noticed there were 2 or 3 flies stuck behind the glass with the pigs! I found a person working and told her about the flies, and the concern for fly strike. She says she'll spread the word to whoever was in "pet care." Fast forward five minutes and I ran into the very same "pet care" specialist who was telling a man about the Skinny Pigs. I listened for a few minutes, noticed the guy seemed interested and I said "Just so you know, Skinnies are more vulnerable than the regular pigs..." The sales girl interrupted and said "No they're not. I have one, and he's fine." Like that was the final word on the matter. I tried to rebuff and she just kept talking over me until the customer walked away. I'm not sure if it's her personally that's the problem, or are they really trained to think that skinnies are no different than the furry ones? I also told her what I told the first girl about the flies and she says "I know, but they just fly back in again anyway!" HOW IS THIS OK?! It's so frustrating. Sorry for the rant, but I was sooo freaking mad.

How disgusting. Those poor guinea pigs, especially the skinnies. Hopefully the customer lost interest when he heard you and how rudely she acted in return, realising she might not know as much and end up searching about them on the internet instead.

I had a similar experience with PetSmart...:( I noticed that the pigs were out of hay, mentioned it, and she said "why would I care about those guinea pigs?" Seriously? Now there is another problem with PetSmart. Just like KittyandNancy said in my thread I posted, they should be called PetDumb.

I went in a small local pet shop once and a woman was purchasing two baby guinea pigs.

She had obviously done her research and asked about purchasing a bag of specialist guinea pig feed - the sales woman said "well the big bag of rabbit food is what we feed them on, and much cheaper so just get a big bag of that" the woman buying said "what about feeding greens etc" to which the sales person said "well you won't need to if you feed the rabbit food but you can give them apples and stuff and these treats"

- and so it went on with the buyer educating the sales person, and the sales person not listening - so really some pet shops just don't give a stuff about the guinea pigs! I had to remove myself from the shop otherwise my holiday probably wouldn't have ended with me in jail for sorting out the stupid shop person - and I'm not a violent person

I go to a pet shop that doesn't sell animals.... I think all people who work in pet shops should have at least a level 2 (equivalent to GCSE A -C) in animal care.

Sounds very irritating! I hate it when people are so ignorant.

The pet shop I use for my supplies is actually very good for a pet shop. It is Pets Corner. The cages could be a little bigger, but they aren't really that small, the workers there are very friendly and obviously do their research, the pets are properly fed, clean, and get regular exercise. One day I went there to get some supplies, it was raining, so one of the rabbits was having exercise in a pen in the shop, by the counter. The staff always have a friendly, long chat with anyone wishing to buy their pets, and they ensure people are going to look after the pets properly. They don't let you buy single guinea pigs, rabbits, gerbils, or any other social animal, and they don't let you have Syrian hamsters living together, they make it clear that they fight when they grow up. They don't actually make any profit from their pets, only from the supplies they sell. And, they only have about 4 different tanks of animals at any one time.

Before I was educated about how bad pet shops are for buying animals, I bought my pair of boars from this pet shop, and they were actually really healthy and tame. One of them is the one in my avatar. They did proper health checks on the piggies before they could be sold, and they gave me a leaflet about basic piggy care. I know pet shops support breeders, which is a bad thing, but it certainly takes much better care of its animals than Petco or Petsmart. So if you're going to buy from a pet shop, buy from one that is actually competent with its animals!

I think I'm going to start ordering their food online from Amazon. I am tired of supporting Petsmart by buying food from them. Plus I can get larger bags of the oxbow online.

I have a level 2 in animal care and can't get a pet shop job yet idiots who don't know anything about animals can -____-

That is a real shame! Any pet shop worth their salt should employ qualified people. Maybe they think qualified people need paying more, which is true, you should be rewarded for your qualifications. If they are employing the wrong people, who don't know about animals, it is counter productive, as customers do not get the right advice and will go elsewhere. Put that on your cv, and fingers crossed!

Just gotta keep trying! Hopefully I'll find something soon! :)

You can always get your CV professionally written. It makes the most of what you have, and presents it really well. I have had mine done twice! Once in 2000, then last year

Depends who you use. Mine was £90, they did a covering letter too. Used it twice. Got an interview on both occasions, one of them is they job I have now, the other invited me back for a 2nd interview. So it is worth it.
