I used to buy the Pure Pastures Meadow Hay from Mole Country Stores but unfortunately I had some very dodgy batches - the hay was sometimes damp, even wet and mouldy. I started to buy my hay from a local farm shop and have been impressed - this hay is soft, green and smells lovely. However, today I was going through it and have found mouse droppings in the first 2 bags (we bought 10 bags). Presumably I'm going to have to throw it away?

Better than a real life mouse that came in with my hay a few years ago I thought I was imagining it when I it was walking dazed as if it had just woken up. I'd left the bag in the car and brought it in evening time from then on I bought sealed bags x

If you've found mouse droppings I would definitely bin the batch. If there are droppings there is likely to have been urine, too, at some point. My piggies have recently all had upset tummies. The vet thinks it may have been hay contamination - and mentioned rodent wee on hay as a cause of many upset tummies.

If I saw any contamination in whatever I buy for the piggies and hamster, I would throw it away without a second thought.

I'm not sure if you could complain because isn't gay classed as a natural product?

I once found a dehydrated dead mouse in my bag of hay..... it was awful - made me feel sick... I would bin it just to be on the safe side..

OMG Sian, you must have had the shock of your life!

Thank you VickiA. I think it was the wee that was worrying me the most but didn't realise how much of a problem it could be.

Thanks Flamestriker - I thought as much but just wanted to make sure before I threw 10 bags of hay away! I'll obviously be binning it but may just mention it to the farm shop to see what they have to say about it.

Worse thing was the hay was given to the pigs and I saw it in their cage .... I freaked out ..... took it down to pets at home vets and asked them to tell me what it was..... complained to B&M and they sent me a voucher.... x

I'm not surprised you freaked out - I would have too! At least B&M sorted it out though.
