Adult Guinea Pig
Noticed what appeared to be a tiny spot of blood in Monty's cage today - only a tiny one but that's enough to get me concerned - no sign of anything so did wonder if he had a tiny cut as he was having fun playing with a paper bag with some hay in yesterday.
Anyway tonight I was giving him a slice of apple and noticed more blood - seemed watered down - but it is from his mouth/gums - have cleaned the area as best I can and he stopped bleeding - seems fine and still eating/drinking as his usual pattern - thinking he might have cut his mouth on a sharp bit of food?
I have to say Monty is one of those guineas who has up and down spells - he is a real little fighter and is still pretty chirpy and enjoys his food and comes to the front of the cage when he hears me especially if I have food. He is drinking good amounts of water and seems his usual self. Weight goes up and down these days, which I keep a close eye on.
No more signs of anymore blood.
The head vet who saw Leo bunny last week is on Wednesday this week so I'm thinking of taking Monty to see him for a check up - Monty is a frail little chap these days but he seems happy enough and comfy, can't see we will get very far with a vets visit but want to start with a local vet as it is not really practical to go to Simon in Northampton - distance wise.
Mum was saying it's a good job I have the next 3 weeks off work as I can keep a really close eye on him.
I'm wondering what bleeding can be caused by - maybe a small cut from food or might be something gum/dental related?
Times like this makes me realise Monty won't be around forever - I'm normally quite accepting of this with older animals but for some reason with Monty I'm not
At least Leo bunny seems better after his off spell recently, looks like they both have possible dental issues now, my vet is confident with Leo but don't think he will be as confident with Monty, will have to see.
