My fiancé and I are in the (really really) early discussions of buying our first home, and obviously guinea pig housing is top priority. Our three girls currently live in their hutch in a converted shed but we would love to move them permanently indoors. I have read a few threads about this but before we do anything, I just wanted to ask if anyone has any advice on moving piggies outdoors to indoors.
We won’t be ready to make the move for a while yet- as I said early stages! But it would be helpful to know if them moving inside is a possibility because it will influence what we buy!
One of my pigs is 2 and the others are both around 7 months.
P.S. Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place!
P.P.S. If anyone would be willing to answer some really obvious questions about indoor pigs, that would be great!

It’s absolutely fine to move them indoors. All you’ll really need to do is make sure you’ve got a big enough cage for them. Depending on what bedding you use, you may want to have a change but otherwise, there’s little to it!

My shed dwelling piggies come inside every summer due to the heat in their shed. It’s really nothing more than setting their cage up and bringing them in

Thank you for your reply! Can I ask, do yours get used to the household noise? We would obviously house them somewhere quiet!
Also, my girls absolutely love being on the grass in their run. As long as the temperature indoors and outdoors is fairly similar, I assume I can still take them outside for a few hours of run time?

They very much get used to noises. I can vacuum right up to our cages and the piggies don’t even move away any more. They’ve always lived indoors.
they are also used to the dog (noises only as he’s not allowed in their room).

to be honest it’s quite quiet at our house anyway when we are all at work, but I’ve been working from home the past year and the piggies are taking full advantage with their wheeking for food 😂

Yes they are fine with indoor noises. A little nervy for the first 12 hours or so but soon get used to it.
Yes so it’s depends on the temperature of the day. Mine only come indoors when it is too hot for them to stay in their shed. At that point it’s usually because it’s too hot outside in general! They are then let out for grass time early mornings and then again in the evenings and kept in the house at all other times. (Earlier in the year and cooler, then they are still living in the shed but will be on the grass during daylight hours.)

Yes! Mine are definitely exploiting us being at home to get more snacks!
That’s really useful to know about the hoover. I am a bit worried about hay, I mean it gets everywhere as it is! But if they can tolerate a hoover, that will make things easier 😊

That is so good to know, they would never forgive me if they couldn’t have grass time!

We live in an open plan flat so our piggies live in our kitchen/ dining room / living room, most noises don’t bother them and they will soon pick up on your daily routine! Hay does get everywhere I would recommend getting a good hoover! 😂

It really does get everywhere 😂 but to help minimise, I keep my hay in plastic storage boxes in the piggie room. I keep them on bath mats and fleece, and I regularly remove poos and wet hay throughout the day.
I didn’t want to block up my Dyson with hay, so I bought a Henry Hoover (it was on special offer 😂) and it’s by far the best for hay and animal mess. Helps with the dog and horse hair around here too! Plus if it saves me the cost of repairing the dyson, I’d rather use that 😂
