Cannot believe I am posting here again so soon but today our darling Barley passed away in my arms at the vets. We noticed last night that he had laboured breathing and gave diuretics on hearing fluid on the stethoscope. Our vets are happy for us to do this when needed. Got him to the vets today and he was incredibly stressed during the exam which is unlike him as apparently he was always a dream during his 6 weekly conscious dentals. He fought while the vet tried to listen to his chest and when the vet went off to look up medication for a heart meds trial he passed in my arms. I am completely heartbroken and in shock.

Barley was just over 5 and came to us at a year old to live with Ellie who had just lost her friend Terk. They were eventually joined by Star and Jessica after our large herd had to be split. When Barley slowly lost each of his girls he was on his own but would not bond with Maud and Robyn due to Maud having other ideas. She loved him through the grids but not in her cage. My friend Gigi contacted me and asked if I would like to rehome her recently bereaved sow Dulcie May and they bonded well. Barley adored Dulcie and they would sit and groom each other. They were joined accidentally by Ophelia skinny when she lept the grids into their cage but they accepted her straight away.

Barley was a complete softie and looked after his girls so well. Ophelia was not so sure about this and would flick her ears in his face which just confused him. He would plod round the cage rumbling at both his girls and anything else he saw. He lived in his own little Barley world and we always joked about this. He was so special.

Love you so much Mr B. You have left a massive hole in our hearts. I hope your girls were waiting for you.

Oh I’m so sorry Helen. Mr B was a beautiful fuzzy butt. What a shock for you. Popcorn free fuzzy fellow. Hugs Helen and Ross xx

Hello Helen. what a great guy Barley was. he was a great character and must been a great joy to love.
He died in your arms and wow that's very powerful he would smelt and your voice be last he heard.
RIP Little guy. xx

Am not sure Ophelia has even noticed he is not here. She has been asleep all day in her fleecy bulb bless her and is now eating her veg as normal. Dulcie was looking for him earlier. I was a bit more worried about her as she has recently gone completely blind due to cataracts but she is doing Ok. I think both girls knew he was poorly so we're keeping their distance this morning except when Dulcie noticed he had dill and sat on his head to get to it.

Ophelia knows, but she is not the demonstrative type; not all piggies grieve deeply or visibly - the same as humans.

I am so sorry that you have lost your gorgeous Barley. I have always been a bit envious of you - he would have been the perfect husboar for Nerys and Nesta. A friendly and laid-back ginger teddy... WOW!

Stampedes to the Rainbow Bridge are always hard to cope with, especially from those piggies you have not been able to brace for their passing. Please take your soul time to digest it all. There is only so much grieving you can process at any time. :(

BIG HUGS

Thanks Wiebke. They would have made a lovely trio.

Good to know about Ophelia. She is charging about flapping her ears at the mo.

Ophelia is gaining massively in status. If she is the ambitious type, then she will be in her element!

I've had sows coming into a monster season instantly when the Tribe husboar died and were chasing other sows right across his body, some that have pined acutely and even died, and others that would actually blossom... You can just never tell. We have still a very conventional view on how you should react to a death and transfer that also onto guinea pigs, but the reality is very different - for both species!

Very sorry to read this Helen especially after your other losses - Barley was so fuzzy and lovely, I would have happily pignapped. Sleep well furry Barley. I am sure you will have found your girlfriends in the big meadow.

I am so sorry for your loss. Barley was a beautiful piggie, and your lovely tribute shows what a lovely character he was, and how much he was loved.
