I seem to be having a paranoid piggie evening tonight!

Most of the time when Sir Finley Pig ;) drinks from his water bottle he coughs. Working on a stroke unit this is making me increasingly worried that he is aspirating and is going to end up with a chest infection! He has occasionally coughed whilst eating too but not during any other time.

Any ideas why this is happening or how to prevent it, and is he increasing his chances of aspirating due to this?!

Thanks in advance!

I have no idea why but am sending Sir (Gorgeous) Finley lots of healing vibes & tell him not to worry his Mummy so much :))

Coughing is the reflex to stop aspiration. I would pop him to a vet maybe, he may have a sore throat and beed a quick course of antib's.

x.

Thank you both, i'm sure it's probably because he's guzzling it down too quickly. He doesn't seem to learn to slow down though rolleyes :)

Flinn does this sometimes when he eats, I personally think it's him being a greedy guts lol rolleyes

I do remember reading a thread about piggies who cough when eating and I think the consensus was that they were being greedy guts, just wondered if it was the same for drinking?! Hope so!

I have had the occasional cougher when drinking too quickly. I never had a problem afterwards.

No idea sorry, just wanted to say I hope he is ok. They do things like this from time to time to worry their slaves...... Give Mr Finley pig our love, C&T send a wheek x

Oh I hope he's not ill :( I love Mr Finley Pig... Sending you hugs you lovely piggie! x

As said previously the coughig reflex prevents aspiration and this is not the main concern.

I would be more concerned at the frequency of coughing whilst drinking which can be the first signs of dental or mouth issues. If you have a good cavy savvy vet it might be worth a check up given this is clearly a change in behaviour?

Thanks Pebbles, I'm assuming his teeth would have been checked/commented on when he was anesthetised for his neutering but this was 5 months ago. Front teeth are fine but I'd need a vet to check his back teeth. I wouldn't necessarily say it is a change in behaviour I just think I was sitting watching them for so long last night that I started to get a bit paranoid, however, I'll take him along to the vets for a check up, not worth letting anything get out of hand.

Thanks :)

Very unlikely unless you had issued a specific and seperate instruction to do this whilst he was under....and they noted it on the paperwork the vet actually looks at.
In all my years of piggie ops and procedures, only one vet on one occasion did a dental inspection without receiving a specific instruction to do so from me.
