Meet Mrs Healy. She is 5 years old, she came back into rescue when her sister died, her owner didn't want her to be alone. She was born at the rescue and is one of Scrappers cousins (and Ellen's sister @Claire W )
She has rejected all potential friends, being very grumpy and aggressive. I noticed that she had crusty nipples, a sign of possible ovarian issues, so l had her checked out by the Guinea pig vet, Ellie Whitehead. Sure enough she had two largish ovarian cysts.
She had surgery yesterday, ovariectomy by keyhole surgery performed by Ellie.
Mrs Healy was eating and pooping straight after the op, and today is acting as if nothing has happened, despite two bald patches on her flanks. All she is taking is done metacam for pain relief.
This procedure is so amazing compared to a full spay
Let's hope Mrs H becomes less grumpy and l can find her a friend!

All the best for a quick and smooth recovery!

Simon prefers a full spay but after I had one of my sows with a womb going horribly wrong, I am not complaining...

That's what Dot had done a full spay by Simon because she had a tumour in the uterus I believe

I have only had one piggy spayed and unfortunately she didn't make it, this was my first of my piggies and l didn't know about experienced vets etc. However it coloured my views to say the least.
Several of my sows have had ovariectomies and all have done extremely well. Removing the ovaries reduces the hormone load so future uterine problems and other hormonal issues are much less likely, but not impossible. Having seen the speedy recovery (apparently the gut is not disturbed with this procedure, unlike with a spay, so gut problems are less likely).
However an experienced surgeon like Simon would be extremely good at reducing any risk.
I just wonder if the ovariectomy is technically an easier procedure so perhaps more vets would be comfortable with performing it?

Can a full spay be done with keyhole surgery,in humans it can !I hope Mrs Healy becomes less grumpy and more happy !
