hi guys me again i wanted to know what is best food for my piggies at the moment they have muesli but they only eat certain bits and leave alot in the bowl so would pellets be a better food for them? and would a sudden change from muesli to pellets be ok?
thanks
Lisa

Pellets are a much better food because they prevent selective feeding :) and are, in my opinion, healthier. You will need to gradually introduce the new food by mixing it with their current food and then slowly increase the amount of pellets until they are totally on the new food x :) hope that helped

:))I have recently changed mine to pellets, they have Mr Johnsons Advance. I phased out their old food over a week or so as I read it can upset their digestion if you change food suddenly. They seem to eat all the pellets where as quite a bit was left with the muesli type food. Hope this helps:))

A gradual change is good but I find the boys eat more with the pellets as they are not constantly picking out the bits they don't like! It means they get a much better balanced diet and don't miss out on any vital vitamins and minerals. If you look at the top of this section of the Forum you can read a whole bundle of reviews of different food but in the end your piggies will find one they prefer.

I know people who have good experiences of Burgess, Harringtons and Science Selective but try a few and see what works for you. Just don't be tempted to buy too big a bag at any one time, or stockpile as the vitamins do degrade over time and become useless.

Pellets anytime!

It has now been scientifically proven that there is a direct link between muesli feeding and dental and other health problems in rabbits due to a selective and therefore unbalanced diet; p@h have already removed muesli food for rabbits. It can be assumed that a muesli diet for guinea pigs would show similar results if it was investigated.
Here is one article: http://www.scotsman.com/news/environment/muesli-can-kill-pet-rabbits-scientists-warn-1-2918956

If you want to shift from muesli to pellets, please do so gradually.

Pigs are picky little things and will just nip their favourite bits and leave the rest which can cause problems for them as they wont be recieving all the vital nutrients they need. I have always used nuggets for my likkle piggles as they have all the nutrients they need with additional supplements for vitamin C :)

If/when you decide to move your pigs on to a new food you must remeber to always introduce it slowly over a one to two week period, crumbling the new food over the old and slowly increasing the ratio of new to old until you phase outthe oldfod completely. Good luck!
